I bought a used 302 (1973, 888) to replace my old one which had water in the oil. Everyone told me I had a cracked block, blown head gasket etc. broke it down and so far found nothing. Is there a way to test the exhaust manifolds? When I took the elbow off the manifold there's a solid plate between the gaskets. what's up with that?

They can be pressure tested. Is the block bare has it been checked.

You'll probably find a small hole in that 'solid' plate.. That's for reliving trapped air.. The water flow system required the water to exit the manifold via the hose on the end of the manifold, not the water passages up to the elbow, that's why they put the plate there....
