I replaced the completely melted impeller and housing (worst piece of engineering I have witnessed in 20 years) and when I re-install the lower unit with the shift lever in Forward (F) and the spline on the lower unit spun to the area where the prop is spinning correctly forward, when it seats, it is either in Nuetral (N) or Reverse (R).
I have tried numerous combinations of the spline in N and the shift lever in F, N, and R and it fails every time.
My guess is I am off by one spline, but really not sure.
The 3 positions I am able to move the spline on the lower unit to are: flat spot directly facing prop drive shaft (R) - flat spot approx 30 degrees to the right of the prop shaft (N) - flat spot almost 90 degress to the right of the prop shaft (F).
I have also tried re-seating the lower unit while holding the shift lever in areas close to the F, N, and R postions and then end up with R=N, etc.
Please tell me the trick before this unit which should still have plenty of hours left on it ends up in this Fridays trash.

You get a LOT farther with patience.

You need to remember that only turn the prop counter-clockwise, the slightest turn clockwise kicks the shifter out of position.

It can be done in either position, neutral detent works.

Small engines I reach up and slowly turn the flywheel to align crank and driveshaft while raising the drive.

You GOT TO remember to hold your mouth JUST RIGHT, like this ;) and squint with only the right eye.

Be sure to check the water transfer tube as you come up.

The splined shaft of the shift mechanism can locate incorrectly. Best to put the shift lever in FWD and turn the lower unit shift to forward, Its a pain but offer the lower unit up, engage the water tube, engage the drive shaft, jiggle the shift lever to engage the shift splines and you should have it.
Nice little motors. Have rebuilt many.
