Hello all.
I recently bought a 88 bayliner capri with a 50 HP Mercury o/b. IT is a fantastic hole in the water, and I have decided before next year, I want to redo the padding on the inside. IT is the upholstery that follows the edge of the boat. And the seats in the front of the boat. Once I get the pieces off, I have a family friend that is interested in doing the project, but I am curious how it comes off. This sounds like a stupid question but I am for real. is there small screws bolts from the back? Then once it is redone, how do people in this type of project put the new upholstery back on the fiberglass of the boat? Please help me out if you can, especially if you have done this type of project in the past. If I decided to take it somewhere, how much would that cost to rip it out and do it from scratch?

Please let me know, this is my new winter money wasting project. I love the boat, and want to make it more presentable when having friends family in it.

Look between the pleats in the material if you have pleated panels, you'll probably find most of your fastener's there, hidden from sight!
Some of the panels on my boat that weren't pleated actually went on before the top of the boat was assembled to the boat hull and were screwed on from the backside.
Be careful if you screw any of the panels on from the backside, "keep your screw's short!"

I have a 19 fter that was held on by lag screws from the back. You have to reach to get them.I would pull them myself that's going to cost a lot.The aggravation factor,If you do it you can stop and regroup. If you hire it done they need it gone to produce income. And I like the fact I did it all myself.

I have an 88 Bayliner capri in the middle of resto as well. You could theoretically reach in and pull every one of the screws by going underneath the padding, I am going to be pulling off the cap to get to mine. If you want I can try and grab you a pic today when I get home from work.

Either way you slice it, its going to be a pain.

Also, Right in the corner where it pads across the front of the dashboards there was a screw I had to remove. Funny thing was that it seems the screw was screwed in from below the fabric INTO the actual dash plywood and then was apholstered around it. When I get home I will snag a pic. Here is a pic of the corner I am talking about.

Re: 88 Bayliner Capri Restoration

Ok thanks for the information. Now if the screws are in the diagnals between, is that how I am going to fasten it back onto the boat? IF so how does this process happen accurately? OR is there a different way of doing this. IF so please let me know. I will be looking for the screws this afternoon. Tanks for the information.

Next once i get it off, what is my choice of colors. IF I went all full colors will that look dumb, or do I need to go with the three different colors with the diagnals?

Three colors look cool but a single color can look good to, just depends on what you want, your ability or the ability of the person sowing the panels for you wether you'll be able to do multiple colors or go with a single color.

My 85 Capri has some of the screws exposed with a plastic cap that snaps over the screw head and washer. Pop off the plastic cap and its a phillips underneath. The other screws were hidden in the folds of the upholstry like other members said.

Re: 88 Bayliner Capri Restoration

Ok I am making pretty good progress. I have the front panels off and the back panels off. Now all I have to do is the dash panels.

Next question how much should I expect to pay someone to do this job? They will be replacing the fabric and the foam. Also how much should I expect to pay for materials? I am not doing the seats in the back, just the seats in the front. Thanks for all your help thus far. I would sill be stuck with the panels still hooked up.

THanks,

Hey JC

How is that interior project coming along?? Do you have some pics we/I can see? I had a quote for 1500 for complete interior redo on my 84 15' capri. thats me taking it all to them..I think that is high, plus i can do alot of the flat panels myself. The seats can be purchased pedestal and all for 1/3 the price of re-upholstering them unless you have a family member doing the labor. IM interested in what you had and the colors yo chose for the final product

Larry;)
