I ordered a new exhaust cover from SeaWay, and it came unpainted. Is it advisable to paint it before installing it? It looks like it may be clear anodized, but I'm not sure. I don't really care about appearance, just durability.

If you dont care about appearance then just leave it... You'd need high heat paint anyway I believe...

The cover is water cooled, you won't need high temp. paint.

I used automotive laquer in a rattle can and it has been fine.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll paint it, as soon as the wind dies down. What's left of Ike is passing by today.....

Lacquer or enamel? All my spray paints including my Merc and Ev/Johnson paints are enamel. Probably doesn't matter.

Most important part is prep: sand and clean dust and oil free. Apply 2-3 very thin coats of the proper primer for aluminum (zinc oxide? - available anywhere). Apply 3-4 very thin coats of final color. Top with a couple very thin coats of clear coat if that's what you're looking for. Follow directions on can for re-coating, generally within an hour between coats. It will look great and last forever.

Thanks for the tips!
My motor is nasty looking cosmetically, with a few different Johnson and Evinrude colors already there. And it was a saltwater motor for years. A museum piece it isn't.....but it has always run well. Let's see, if the last cover lasted 40 years, and I paint this one well, and now I only do freshwater, and I'm over 40, then.....my son may appreciate it...
I'm afraid if I make a "clean spot" on my motor, then I might be motivated to paint the whole thing!
