Problems starting, after runs fine???

I have a 96 5.7 with a 2 barell and it is just a pain in the but to start when cold, once it is started it runs like a top, and when its warm, it starts fine, but what should i do to get it starting better, someone told me the choke, but i dont really know how to adjust it.

Have you looked at the choke plate to see if it's closed when cold???
Do you pump the throttle a time or two to prime the engine?
Is this boat new to you?
Have you ever run a carbed engine before? Trust me, it's a valid question.

mercruiser, the choke plate does not close, it is a electric choke. i dont know much about carbs. it is new to me, bought it in june. any help would be nice, i see a ground wire and a purple wire that goes to the choke, but dont know where it goes.

normally, i pump it twice and then leave it about 1/4 the way open

mercruiser, the choke plate does not close, it is a electric choke.

If you open the throttle about 1/4 on a cold engine, the choke plate should be closed. If not, it may be out of adjustment or not working.
See if you can adjust the choke plate to close the choke, then turn the key to the run position and see if it slowly opens (It should). IF not, make sure there is power and ground to the choke coil. If you have power and ground, check the coil itself for continuity. No specs on them, but look for around 2 to 3 ohms. Check the spring on the electric choke, I have found them broken also.

How old are you? The reason that I asks is that younguns new to carb engines don't know what they are doing.These are not turn key start engines.Give the throttle a couple pumps and in the throttle only position ,hold it there about one quater to a half and be reddy to back off when it fires off.Don't know where the throttle only mechanism is?You will either have a button to push at the pivot of the remote control .handle or you may have to pull the handle out depending on that control.

I am 25, i know plenty about how this stuff works, but i am not to good with carbs. i have built 4 motors from drag, to street. i am just new to carbs, never liked messing with them, i just take them to a shop. i will try what don said tomorrow, to dark tonight. i took it out today and i didnt pump it, just held it 1/4 open and it fired up, so i might have been flooding it. but i have never seen the choke plate close either way.

My boat is older than I am. 'course, I'm a youngun too, at 24. And wouldn't ya know, I don't like dealing with carbs EITHER!

Must be a Generation Y thing...

im 31 and i LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVEEEEE carbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they make me sooooo muuchhhhh $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

and they're not that hard once you understand that principles at which they operate under, and you can identify the 5 major circuits in every carb, sterdrive or 2 stroke OB, they all share 5 major circuits.
