1997 Johnson 60HP oil injection problem

My 60 HP engine has trouble starting after I have left it sitting for more than a week. It appears to load the cylinders with oil while just sitting.
When I go to start the engine it spits and sputters and is difficult to keep running and is blowing a massive cloud of smoke. After 5-10 minutes of this show everything smooths out and the engine runs great.
If I use the boat in a day or two no problems.

I leave the engine tilted maybe 35-40 degrees instead of all the way up or all the way down.

Never had oil injection before so don't know what if there is a simple fix or procedure that will cure it.

store all the way down, the oil side of your pump may be going bad.

Thanks for the reply.

That's not good news :(

From what I have been told it seems the pump is a bit pricey. If I decide to replace the pump is it straight forward?? Or is it better left to the pro's?

1 st you need to decide if you want to keep the OMS, pump or if you want to premix your fuel and oil, the cost different is about $250.

Re: 1997 Johnson 60HP oil injection problem

Since the boat has a built in gas tank it's a bit difficult to determine the exact amount of oil I would need to add.
I really like just being able to add gasoline, without the hassle of mixing the oil. Certainly reduces the human error factor.
If the cost of the repair is $250 I would have it repaired without question.
If I get into the $400-$500 range I would rethink having it repaired
The engine does not have many hours on it at all.
Thanks for your input!

either change is fairly simple, the pumps is in the $350 range. couple of hoses, and wires to unplug, and reconnect. it is a diy project.
