1971 McCulloch 75hp outboard won't leave neutral...

Hello everyone,
I recently bought my first boat, and the engine runs beautifully. Unfortunately it was running in a trash can with the prop taken off when I saw it, and I couldn't actually see it in gear. Now I got it home and it will not leave neutral; and when you rev the engine there is a loud rattling sound from the bottom of the boat. I believe it is most likely a problem with the dog clutch, as the linkage seems to be turning fine, and I still can't get it into gear manually with the linkage disconnected.

Is there any chance I can find a new dog clutch? Are they somewhat universal or will I need the specific McCulloch one? Are there any other potential problems that it could be? I know the shear pin is in correctly, I already checked. Do you think a local marina/repair shop would be able to get the part for me?

Thanks for your help; I'm new to boating and just hoping that my first attempt at owning a boat isn't a complete failure...

Unfortunately the McCulloch was not the best choice for an everyday motor.
They were pretty good in their day but the 75 did have some recalls and factory bulletins.Don't get too excited about the shift problem till you get a look at it.Unfortunately the gearcase is very complicated and requires special tools. You should get yourself a manual .Try the scott guy for help.
I used google and put in ask the scott guy as written came right up.
He may be able to help with advice, manuals etc.Could be as simple as someone removed the pivot pin from the pivot yoke or the shift rod out of adjustment.I don't think that is an easy fix but may not require special tools.
I think the best move is to sell it and go for a more main line motor.

Thanks for the response; I got a hold of the scott guy (he lives half an hour from my house!) and he's helping me with it. I got a new pin for the clutch dog but I'm still having trouble; I think he'll be able to get me fixed up though :)

Glad your making progress. The McCulloch was pretty advanced for the day, getting lots of hp from a relatively small block.
