Re: Mariner 175 id

The carb marking is WH and the other side of the flange is this number 1374-5427-C. There is an other number on the intake side but they are not consistent with each other.

The heads are foam casted.

I'm going to load the pics and post them up.

In the shot of the top is the plug that I striped and found nothing. Just a W stamped in it.

I just did a search on the 1374 number and found that the 34-31178 which at the intake side are all marked 34-*****<- late 5 digits change on each.

So does that mean that there WH 34's?

Ok... It appears you have a 'FrankenMerc'... The carb numbers look like 1989-1990, but the style of covers on that engine are not that era... You have what's known as 'clam shell' covers... The 1989 engines had a single piece engine cover. I haven't found the year that they started, but I'm also pretty sure the lost foam cast heads are later than 1998-1990.

Here's the big BUT in all this... I'm not yet convinced you have WH-34 carbs...Look for a one or two digits number that ends with a '-1' on the top carb, a '-2' on the middle carb, and a -3' on the bottom carb... That's the number we are looking for....

Re: Mariner 175 id

I'll gather all the number from the carbs tonight.

If it's a frankenmerc, it came from the factory that way because none of the bolts have been moved, the paint hasen't been cracked or wrench marks. The only bolt that I could find that were touched are carbs and starter.

Cheers

Back in the bad old days when I was wrenching full-time... When I replaced a power-head, you couldn't tell it had been done either...

I can tell you that the clamshell covers finished before the lost foam cast heads appeared... and that could explain the lack of a serial number on the block... Replacement power-heads were never stamped with a serial number...

I have the rest of the carb number for you today, work got in the way.

I have to find out what year it is now, Thursday night my brother raised the jack plate to the point that it lost water and over heated it. Just from the info you have, is it a nikasil bore? It still runs but it has a knock now.

Cheers

There's no other number on the carbs. The only numbers that are kind of like the ones your looking for are on the intake side, they are 5 digit not 2.

Top
34-11398

Mid
34-21328

Bottom
34-31178

These are the only numbers that differ from each other.

When did merc start using the plated cylinders?

Why didn't they stamp something on the block to id it? I can imagine that they must have the same problem as I'm having.

Re: Mariner 175 id

I've got it narrowed alittle more. The vertical reeds were stop in 91', so that make it pre 1990.

Getting closer.
