So i have had this boat (1989 Maxium i/o open bow) for about a month now.
Had it out a few times and it seemed great.

One problem tho, the past owner put in a 15 Gal gas tank under the rear seat because the factory gas tank was contaminated he said. Also the carpet was in pretty bad shape. I decided to pull the carpet and the floor to get to the gas tank. I am still not sure about what i found. There was untreated 3/4 plywood under the carpet. It was pretty rotten. I pulled up the section between the back of the seats and the engine compartment. Under their was some more wood that was totally rotted and falling apart. I pulled the middle section off with the back of my hammer, it just pulled apart all the way to back of the seats then it was a little harder and i could break it. The front half of the boat was also covered in untreated wood, but i have not pulled that up yet.

I was going to just pull the floor up and put down some new plywood and put some resin or whatever on top of it. But after reading here i think i need to check the boat out some more.

So what do i check and how do i check it. I guessing i need to pull everything out? Seats? Stering consoul?

yup......its all gotta come out.......

putting new wood over rotted ply will just ruin the boat faster......

someone did that with one of my boats.....a bayliner......its totally wet underneath and is due for a complete refit this winter

everything on the floor must come out.........then both decks up and out.....

you will then be able to see any wet foam .....search core sample.......check the stringers and transom once your in there.....

its also a good opertuinity to replace the orig gas tank and do it right.....the boat will be faster ....better ....stronger after its done

a good job at a resto can last 30 plus years

cheers

Thanks for the quick replies!!!

I did read a lot before i posted but have a lot of questions still.

The stringers? Those are the pieces of wood that go from the back to the front of the boat? They are covered with fiberglass, should i drill into them to test if the wood in them is rotten?

The transom, thats the back of the boat were the lowerunit goes out right? How do i check that?

The foam, what i have seem of it so far it is soaked and needs to come out, how do i replace it and what does it do?

And my last question right now, can i still take the boat out fishing? I have been out about 5 times so far with no problem, no leaks that i could tell. Do you think it is ok to finish of the season with out the repairs then start on it this winter?

No dont use it anymore till its fixed and fixed right. You still have a hull to work on, continued use could crack it or worse sink it.

i checked the stringers at the back of the boat and they are all soid except for at the end were they tie into the engine compartment.

Is it possible to just repair the back section?

YES

SAME WAY.....DONT GO TOO DEEP

IT MAY BE STRUCTURAL......BUT ITS MAIN PURPOSE IT TO KEEP YOU AFLOAT IF YOU SINK

im running my b-liner in the exact same condition.....but i monitor it very closely....any doubt....and i wont go

Ok, i think i got a starting point.
Ill do the drill tests and take some pics and ask some more questions when i get off work today.

Then i will decide if i want to tear it down now or wait until winter/next year.

Re: New 2 me 89 Maxium open bow/ Floors were plywooded over

After reading and looking at my boat more i am thinking about just doing the floors and leave every thing else alone.

the stringers are rotted at the rear were it connects to the bilge area and were the cross supports are. The rest of it is dry and hard.

I am thinking this could get me by for a couple years until i am ready to do a full restore or get another boat.

I just dont think i have the time or money to complete the project correctly right now.

Sooooo if i am set on doing this the quick way for now i want to do the best way (does that make sense?

Should i glass over the bad sections in the stringers? Cut the bad area out and use some type of filler?
