ok going to post so someone else can use this info. the part im in need of is on the doug russell site under adaptor housing/shift assy, in order to change the flappers you'll need to take the intermediate housing apart, which means outdrive off and motor out, hope this helps someone else out, i am amazed at how many OMC mechanics and parts houses had no clue as to wht i was looking for

Explain to me why you have to touch the out drive. When the flapper goes in the exhaust tube inside the boat?

Maybe you have to remove a riser on the side where the flapper broke loose.

And where is the old flapper?

One last thing why you even need a flapper?

The flapper(s) are in the mid-drive, it has exhaust stubs pointing up at 45? to clamp on to a 3" x 10" long tube section, which joins to the riser. The outdrive and the engine are fastened to the mid drive.

Maybe you have to remove a riser on the side where the flapper broke loose.

And where is the old flapper?

Probably in the lake

One last thing why you even need a flapper?

I wondered that too, the first time I saw it in my '84 stringer 800. I expect OMC thought water might get back up to the riser somehow without it.

as long as you don't go from wide open to stop, allowing your wake to run up your transom, you probably won't have a problem.
and if you don't park the boat with the tides/waves running up the transom... you won't have a problem either.

Re: omc exhaust flappers

I don't have no stikin flapper. Never had no stikin flapper. My friends don't have no stikin flapper.

But i have seen flappers on boats. In my own inexpert opinion i wouldn't reinstall the flapper.

Wire i don't have no freekkin idea what your talking about. These are not thru the hull exhaust.

There is a manifold, that has a riser that has a rubber hose that has a cast iron tube all connected to the intermediate drive on the INSIDE OF THE BOAT.

The flapper is inside the cast iron tube.

One would have to remove the riser to install the flapper inside the cast iron tube.

One does not have to touch the drive at all.

Now if your looking for the old flapper that might have jammed up the exhaust thats a different story.

But i bet that if one would lift the drive all the way up one would be able to fish out the old flapper, without removing nothing.

you are incorrect that the flapper is in the tube, it is in the intermediate housing on MY rig, if you look up into the intermediate housing, thru the exhaust port, you can see the bottom bolt, and there is a top bolt above it, i have seen the schematics that show that the flapper with the rod and bushing style, i do not have that kind, the port side flapper is still intact, and if you stick a long screwdiver down the hole from inside the boat it functions like a door..........that being said its good to hear some are running without them.. thanks again for the input

Like Chiefalen says, you don't need no stinkin flapper. My '75 never had them and it is still going strong.

Re: omc exhaust flappers

When removing the riser, manifold, and exhaust tube in the 140 85' merc i just got what was stuck all the way down the tube?

A exhaust flapper that broke off.

I got it out of the gimbel when i pull the merc drive. Gonna make it easier when i pull the motor.

Re: omc exhaust flappers

no offense taken here, i had just ran into so many dead end on researching that particular housing (260) horse, and the books dont show jack, and i did ALOT of searching, ill most likely run without them, after pondering for along time, that water does have a long way to go, if it were to dump into the top of the manifold, have nice day
