Starter problem

I have a 1995 Four Winns Horizon with a 5.0 Volvo Penta. When I turn the key to start the engine it sounds like the starter solenoid engages but the starter doesn't turn. However if I continue to turn and release the key 4 or 5 times and then hold the key in the start position for about 5 seconds the starter engages and the engine starts. The problem persists even after the engine is warmed up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Starter problem

it could be the solenoid washer and contact post have corroided or worn away and you are not getting enough current to the starter to turn it. as you bump the switch, the washer rotates slightly and makes good contact. or the starter itself needs rebuilding or replacing. the solenoid is the easiest thing to check. before removing anything, make a diagram of where the wires go.
