Hello guys, I have an a chance to pick this Merc. Thunderbolt 500 50hp motor up for 300.00. Sitting in some ones garage for 1 1/2 years , he said it ran when he took it off the boat and now no boat and needs garage space. Is the Merc. a good motor? Are parts hard to come by? Does this motor have reverse on it? I thought I would which out my 74 Evinrude 40 hp with it or keep it for back up. Thanks for all the help!

No harder than any other engine of that age.

The only thing I would do is a full service... That way you'll get to replace the impeller and have a look at the driveshaft while the leg is off... That was about the time Merc changed to S/S shafts.
