I hope someone might know something about my problem. It's a 1989 Johnson GT 150. The first start is hard as all get out. I pump up the bulb, set my cold idle throttle, push the key in to set the electric choke. Then I proceed to crank and crank and crank. After cranking it over for about 10 minutes it finally tries to fire. During the process, I begin to smell gas like it's trying to flood. As I said, after about 10 minutes it finally tries to catch and eventually fires up. I have pulled the plugs and they are clean as a whistle. The filter is new and I have good spark. After that first start, she'll spark off first time, every time while it's warm. But I sure do hate makin people have to wait on me when I'm launching the boat. Any suggestions will be welcome and I am giving you a pre-emptive thank you. Thanks!!

Re: Hard starting, cold

pump the bulb till hard, idle lever all the way up, turn key to on, push in for an eight count, release key turn to start. if it does not start, repump bulb, turn key to start, then periodically push key in, do not hold it in, holding it in floods the motor. you could also be due a carb cleaning and rebuilding.

you also need a fully charged battery, and clean cable connections, take the apart and clean. that motor has to turn +-300 rpms, for it to start.
