Man, been setting here for 3 hrs reading about the repairs on sea King motors and am impressed at the knowledge available on this site. About 3 or 4 yrs. ago I had to replace my impeller on my 1956 5hp (GG9002B) and although being mechanicial inclined I did not know a thing about outboard motors. I found a site, which I cannot find again, which a moderator sent me a detailed illistrated attachment which made my job a snap. Now, I am looking for that particular illistration and no where can it be found after 2 weeks of searching. Can someone out there email me the above mentioned paper? If I remember the person that sent it to me said it was for a Johnson 5.5 but is exactally the same. Also, I have seen the GG9002 with an A behind it as well as the B, what is the difference?

Thanks guys, will appreciate any response I may receive...

email: d-voyles@att.net........

Oh yes, is there to anyones knowledge a way to modify the lower unit as to install some type of clutch to do away with the shear pin on the prop? The river is really tough on shear pins....Thanks..

no way to modify them that I know of. Those will be the same as the Johnson Evinrudes of the same vintage. You need to pull the powerhead. There should be threads on it.

The Sea Kings have the regular shift connector don't require power head removal. To disconnect requires comeplete removal of one clamp bolt and loosen the other. You have to remove the 4 bolts at the pump buldge
and seperate to see the shift rod connector.

I have replaced the impeller a couple three or so yrs. ago. I did have to pull the power head to get to the shifter arm so I could drop the lower unit. I very seldom use this motoe but have owned it since 1964. Usually when I fish the river I use my 33lb. thrust trolling motor on my 12 ft. gamefisher, a very light boat. Yhanks guys for your replies, appreciate.. Still looking for a parts manual or the instruction manual on replacing an impeller.

not all of them by a long shot. I've done many that you have to pull the powerhead and only one you did not.

There is about 7-8 screws and then you can lift the powerhead off. If you unhook the gas line you can set it out of the way. There will be two 3/8 nuts holding the shift linkage one. Take them off and then take the spring and seal off the driveshaft. Take the four bolts loose at the lower unit and the lower unit will come down. The water pump is on top. Installation is the reverse. Takes me about a half hour.

Interesting.I just checked My factory service manual apparently the 2 pierce shift rod was specific to the 5D11.1955 series motors. When checking the procedure I overlooked the fact that only the 5D11 was 2 piece And to confuse me even more my Buccaneer is a 55.You must never assume
as the saying goes "makes an *** of U & ME.

I've got one of the 1955 odd balls. I pulled the powerhead on it thinking I needed to and turned out like you found out didn't need to. Oh well. Powerhead is junk anyway with a broken rod. Time to part it out.

Hey guys, still have no response to the question as to what the difference is between the A or B in the GG9002 model # on the Wards 5hp. Mine is an "A" but have seen several posts which relate to the GG9200B model #. Any one have an answer? Thanks guys....

Re: 1956 GG9002B Sea King

It was a mid-year change. GG-9002A is a Gale model 5D12, GG-9002B is a Gale model 5D13. The change is the gears on the twist-grip throttle shafts. 5D12 had stamped gears, 5D13 had cast gears. Cast ones are MUCH better.

There is a shock absorbing slip clutch built into the lower unit. It will release when you clobber a rock and re-engage when you get past it. If you are using the correct drive pin it won't shear unless you really clobber something extra hard, if at all. The correct pin is part number 302333 and is made of stainless steel. It is a "drive" pin and not a "shear" pin.
