Im working on a 1988 15' bayliner capri. In places the fiberglass covering had been worn down to the wood, and the wood became wet and rotted through. I have torn out and replaced all the wet wood in the deck and and bad stringers. It had a thin layer of fiberglass over the wood to begin with. How do I go about putting that layer of fiberglass back over the wood and what all do I need? Thanks

I hope you checked the stringers and removed or changed the foam. You need cloth and resin to recoat the floor.Coat of resin then cloth wet it out and let it dry.Fix any air bubbles so water dont get back in.

I haven't installed all the deck yet but I did check and replace any bad stringers. I plan on pulling out the foam because it is soaked, but what type of foam is used in place of it? Any insulating type foam? Thanks

http://www.shopmaninc.com/foam.html Thats what most use.I didnt put any back in mine.I made sealed compartments down both sides jetted with 1/2 pvc at lowest point.1/2 inch holes and pvc at bilge for side drainage.Same on rear corners of boat.I have an i/o.Some refoam some dont.I want mine to be around when im gone so I didnt.I also have twin bilge pumps for rear in case i get a hole.If you foam or dont still need to keep it covered and nose high when in storage.dont cover it with plastic tarp its got to breath.Dry day uncover it and let the moisture out.Dont use great stuff or other department store foam it isnt made for that. Also make sure it has a place to expand. Some pour it cut it then floor over it.The expansion can warp or crack you hull or floor repair.Post some pics man we love that stuff.

Im having problems finding marine grade plywood. No one sells it where I live or will order only one sheet. Will pressure treated board work or something else?

Your big box stores (Home Depot, 84 Lumber and Lowes) won't have marine grade. You would have to go to a lumber yard to find it. The places that sell the various hard woods and special cabinet grade plywood would probably have it, or can get it.

The original wood used in your boat was probably just regular old plywood. Some stuff I read implies it might not even be exterior grade. So, if you use pressure treated, it will definitely be better than what came with the boat to begin with.

Re: Replacing fiberglass covering over woodden deck?

Since we are on the deck subject I have a question. Why does everyone suggest that we seal the deck. Wouldn't it be better to let any water that gets on the deck to drain under then into the bilge and pump it out. Would it be better to have vents in the deck so air can get in and dry everything out. Maybe even install power vents to pump air in. My Glastron had a sealed compartment up front. There was always water in there. I drilled two one inch holes drained the water (probably from condensation) blew air in till everything dried out. Then I installed drain plugs when I go on the water. Every time I check the compartment it's dry. I do leave the plugs out when not using the boat. In my opinion I think there should be a way to drain any water and pump air in the lower part of the boat. Comments please.
