My brother's boat is a 1999 StarCraft 196 FishMaster with a 115 Merc. The engine Rpms are at 5900 - 6000 rpm according the tachometer on the dash.
The motor supposedly has the prop that was intended for the boat, so we're not sure if the on board tach is reading accurately - so where do I purchase a tach that will work on an outboard motor?

I have two automotive tachs and neither will work. The old analog (with a wire clamp) seems to work, but does not have a scale high enough (the needle runs out of scale).

My digital wire clamp tach won't work due to the close prximity of the other wires interfering with the signal. So that doesn't work either!

The only real way to check the tacho is to use a calibrated 'shop' unit and verify the on-board against the shop tach. The other alternative if to buy an optical tacho and check it against that...

If you're looking to buy a new on-board, then the shop here on iBoats has a good selection of units...

Chris,
Thanks for the info on the optical tach. I assume you're talking about the ones that require the use of a self adhesive strip of reflector tape?
Where can I purchase one like that?

No idea...

Try one of the local auto shops, or if you're handy with a soldering iron, I remember a few years ago one of the electronics magazines had a kit... An electronics shop may have the kit.
