Trim Gauge not working

I have a 1998 22' Crest Pontoon, all mechanisms controling the tilt/trim works well except the gauge. What the gauge does do is peg out at the top once the ignition is turned to the on position and does not move when the motor is trimmed up or down. Any ideas?

Thanks, Charles

Re: Trim Gauge not working

from reading most post's in the forum, its very rarely that the actual gauge stops working. there is a sending unit on the actual drive (not sure if you have OB or I/O, my guess is OB) where there may be corroded wires and/or the wires may have came loose.

Re: Trim Gauge not working

The gauge reacts to a spring loaded sender mounter on the fixed motor bracket. Look under the motor, above the tilt mechanism at the pivot point. On my Yamahas it is a black arm about 1/2" long actuated by an adjustable tab on the motor itself. They have a tendency to stick open or closed. Free that up untill it moves and then check your gauge. Light coating of marine grease helps keep mkine from sticking.

Remove the trim wire from the gauge and measure resistance, (ohms) from the wire to ground, (any black lead under the dash). If it reads infinity, you have an open circuit, (no connection through the sender to ground).
A trim gauge is just a voltmeter connected to a variable resistor, similar to a fuel gauge.

I had a similar problem on my 96 evinrude, the sensor on the bracket was stuck. Gave it a shot of PB blaster to free it up and it works great. Good luck.
