Disconnecting Shift Rod 88spl Need Help

Hi, Can anyone tell me how to disconnect the shift rod on a johnson 88spl. It seems impossible to get to the rod to disconnect it

They are different depending on the model and year. What is your model number?

If it is any thing like my 2oohp, you a can get to the bolt from the starter side of the motor, I have pretty large hands and found it fairly simple to reach the bolt. To make it even easier, I removed my vro pump and disconnecting the rod became butter.

As Ezeke asks what year is it?

The parts diagrams will indicate if it has a two part rod or a single piece rod.

All those i checked had a single piece rod which has to be disconnected at the very top

Try search. Engine has pin on starboard side at shift lever, remove pin, push in on end of shift shaft.
