why put an electric pump on it. You can convert it to a regular fuel pump and not need a battery to run it.

Yes an OMC vacuum pump would be better. However, someone posted that they used an electric 3-4 psi pump for a conversion and it worked fine.

Well, if you installed a pulse pump today it should never really need to be replaced for the life of the engine. Yes saltwater is very bad for your motor. Make sure you rinse it off/out after every outing.

Also, you aren't really running 20 miles offshore with an old 18 hp are you? Sure sounds dangerous, but then again I'm inland. What would I know?

I'm not saying that motor will leave you stranded. Its a fine motor. I just worry that if the weather turns it and your boat won't get you back to shore quick enough. Since you have a small motor I assume you have a small boat. I would never venture out 20 miles on Lake Ontario let alone the ocean in a 14-15' boat, which I assume is about what you have. Maybe I'm way off base here. Perhaps that's common where you are.

Saltwater is a nightmare unless you do constant maintenance on the motor, trailer, and boat. The motor has to be thoroughly flushed with fresh water each time it's used, and the boat and trailer need to be completely washed down also, with soap and water. I used to buy WD-40 by the gallon and spray the outside of the powerhead and every exposed nut and bolt on the engine. It has lasted 40 years and still runs well (the first 27 were in saltwater), but it really shows when you look at the engine.
I used to take my 13 foot Whaler 8-10 miles offshore in Fla, but it was only in perfect weather conditions, early in the morning before the thunderstorms blew in. I also have an "unsinkable" boat, 2 engines, 2.5 gas tanks, two batteries, a VHF radio, a lot of flares, and a float plan. It was also fairly busy where I was at.
