Engine Runs Smooth, All Of A Sudden I Have No Power Over 20,000 Rpm`s. It Has All New Plugs And Starter. Runs Good When The Throtle Is Have Way And No Power Or Increase Of Power Or Rpm`s When It Is Full Open. It Only Goes 10 Mph When It Should And Use To Be Able To 30 Mph. Any Suggestions.

You're not running on all four.

Could be one or a combination of three things.

1. Compression.

2. Spark.

3. Fuel (Carb's).

Well, that certainly narrowed it down.:)
Sorry , I'm a Mercury man.
The best advice I can give is to go through the fuel system - filter, bulb, pump, carbs.

First step would be to check that the tank vent is fully open and not fouled with anything. Second step would be to check to see that all plug wires got back on the correct cylinders and are tightly snapped on the plugs. Checking float bowls for water would be my next step but I don't know how far into the engine you are willing to go. Hope this helps get you going.

20,000 rpms damn what are u running. 2,000 k pump the in line primer while going and play with the choke and see if u can get it up. Do compression test.

The Boat Ran Great And Then My Brother Inlaw Wanted To Look Under The Hood And I Told Him N0t To Touch Anything But He Had To Touch Everything. The Next Time I Took It Out It Didn`t Go As Fast As It Did Before. It Ran 30 Mph At First And Now It Only Goes 10 Mph. Could It Be The Throttle. It Has New Plugs And A New Starter. It Runs Smooth And Starts Right Up But Has No Top End Speed. Is There An Electronic Top End Gear. This Is A Water Sking Boat With A1984 Evinrude 115 Engine. I Ran It 12 Times With N0 Problems And It Ran Great And Now It Just Won`t Go Over 10 Mph. Help, Stripers Are Coming Soon, And I Need This Boat To Run Right. Thanks.

Aha, now we're getting somewhere.
What are brother in laws for?:)
I've got a brother in law like that too. Fortunately though, he limmits himself to screwing up his own stuff.
I can't testify to that motor, but I had a 25 Mariner once that had a similiar problem. Mechanic said he replaced the hi-speed stator and she was good as new.

What is the compression of all the cylinders by number? Standing in back of the engine, fscing the spark plugs, The cylinder numbers are as follows.

2....1

4....3

Do the spark plugs all look alike? Describe their appearance.

With the spark plugs removed, the spark should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame..... a real SNAP! Does it?

Is your brother in law a redneck?

I Don`t Think It Is The Spark Plugs, With The Old Ones In It Ran Great. With The New Ones In It Run Nice And Smooth But Has No Power. Could It Need A Throttle Adjustment.

Re: 1984 115hp Evinrude- Won`t Run Over 10mph-help

its your high speed needles. He probably screwed them up cause they are 1 of the things that screw in. I don't know haw many carbs u have? 4 probably. I don't know what they should be but mine are 3/8 out from lightly all the way in. Im thinking its something you can see from standing at the motor that he must have touched. After plugs it didn't work good or did you have it up to 30mph with new ones. put in old plugs and see if it works?

I Just Tried The Old Plugs And I Still Have No Top End Speed. What Are The High Speed Needles And How Do I Adjust Them? Thanks For Your Help.

Pull the throttle cable and manualy open the carbs. Do the butterfly's open at the same time? At full throttle are they both flat and parallel? I suggest you get an oem manual for your motor and follow the procedure for lync and sync. It would also be in your best interest to answer Joe R. questions completely, he knows that motor inside out.

There are no needles to speak of on those carbs. All jets are fixed. He could have messed with the timing adjustment, I would verify the timing before taking it for a spin again. Try Joes method in the FAQ pages.

Re: 1984 115hp Evinrude- Won`t Run Over 10mph-help

What's that old joke about the difference between in-laws and outlaws?
....Outlaws are wanted. :)

Seriously though, how long was your B-I-L inside the engine....that would give some clue as to how long he had to tinker, and what might be the scope of his work.
Did he approach it with tools, or was he bare-handed....that also would limit his potential impact.

Any odd noises? It could be something as simple as mixed plug wires i.e. 2wires to wrong cylinders

When suggestions from technicians with many years of experience are ignored, it's not likely that more would be offered.

He answered your question Joe. Somewhat, it was running until his bro inlaw touched it. He said plugs looked good and it ran fine before. I was thinking piston but if he had it going until someone touched it i don't see how he would have ruined a cylinder.
I know you know what your talking about but he doesn't think its cylinder. Everyone appreciates your help, you have helped me. Thanks

Re: 1984 115hp Evinrude- Won`t Run Over 10mph-help

I would look at the linkage between the top carb and the bottom carb.

The metal rod, linkage rod is connected using nylon fittings, they get old and brittle with age (sort of like I am) and can break easily.

If someone was tinkering around under the cowling it is easy to break or disconnect one of the linkage connectors.

It would idle great, but not much power under load as you are only running on one carb, the butterfly is not opening on the other. That would be your bottom carb not opening.

I think you were asked this question about carbs opening in an earlier post.

Take a look and see what you find, any questions come back and post results and ask some more.

If Joe Reeves suggests or asks for results of tests, come back and reply.
He has helped literally thousands of members with repairs.

If you do not understand how to perform the tests or what tools, test equipment is needed, just ask, members will reply with an answer.
