I received some test harnesses on Friday and did some work on the engine today. I have a problem I was hoping someone may be able to shed some light on. Before I did anything, I warmed the engine up to operating temp. The Tach was working fine at this time.
I hooked up the TPS harness following the directions in the repair manual word for word and things went well. I did disconnect the No.1 ball post throttle linkage per manual before I did the test. The reading I got was 0.52..the specs in the manual says the reading should be 0.49 - 0.51. I wasn't sure how serious it was so I did the adjustment anyway. It took a few minutes, but I finally got the reading consistently at 0.51 so I left it at that.
I then did a de-carb since it has never been done before, 10 years and 550+-hours. I used Deep Creep. I took the front black air cover off to expose the throttle valves. The engine was running but in neutral. I sprayed the Deep Creep into each opening for 5-8 seconds....she started to smoke but not excessively. I then turned the key off and let her sit for 15+- minutes. Started it up, she smoked pretty bad for 30 or so seconds, then I took the boat for a ride. She purred like the proverbial kitten, sounded great, no issues.....except the tach doesn't work now.
When I say "doesn't work" here is what I mean. It has power, but is very difficult to see. The display is very faint and is completely wrong.
I couldn't tell the rpms's I was running because each number was only partially displayed, or sometimes fully like the #8 in the first digit spot with no second digit displayed (like 8000 rpms) The trim gauge was all wacked out...sometimes showing no bars, sometimes the bottom three, sometimes just the top one bar.
All the while it was very very difficult to see like it was on a dimmer or something. Sometimes is was completely blank but never did it show normal, bright display.
When I got back, I re-checked the TPS and she was still at 0.51. I wanted to make sure it didn't vibrate off that adjustment.
Is it possible something I did screwed up the tach or could it just have been a coincidence that the tach crapped out today and needs to be replaced?
I unplugged all wires in back of the tach, checked for loose or corroded wires..all looked good, plugged it back in and still have the same problem.
Thanks,
Tim
