I have an 83 dt60 that deleloped a problem this weekend. While at nearly full throttle the motor seemed to come out of gear. The motor will move the boat at about 3 to 4 mph, but any attempt at opening the throttle just causes the motor to wind out. reverse is operational. I can rotate the prop in gear and turn the engine over. There were no strange sounds when this happened or when I manuelly rotate it. Looking in the manuel and parts breakdown I see something called the clutch dog beetween forward and reverse. Am I on the right track or could it be something else.

It could be that your shifter was never fully engaging in forward. Some damage could have been done. However check the shift operation with the cable disconnected. If you are lucky the fully engaged forward position can be corrected by cable adjustment. If this is the case change the oil after you have reset to try to get rid of any metal bits.

Thanks, I thoroughly inspected all linkage and confirmed it is fully engaged.
I fear I,m in for a lower end rebuild.

Sorry, it could be the prop hub slipping. I missed that. I dont know what hub setup you have. If it is the fixed hub then pull the prop and look at the rubber mounting. If it is bulging out some then it could be defective.

Re: 83 suzuki lower unit problem

thanks, I have not checked that yet, sounds like it would make sense.
What can you tell me about removing the prop bearing assembly if it becomes necessary, the clymers manual is not quiet clear enough for me, it sounds like a slide hammer is used, but how does it attach to the prop. I see a part number for an attachment from browns point, but dont know how it would work with a slide hammer(concerned about metric threads on attachment and sae on slide) the local marine shops have been no help.
any info you could give me would be appreciated.

If the motor has been serviced regularly then the prop should come off easily. Sometimes a soft faced mallet aimed at the root of the prop will be sufficient to dislodge it. When you refit it be sure to grease the splines with waterproof grease.
