I just bought this engine and on the first test I noticed some grey kinda foamy oil coming out what appears to be a small hole in the bottom of the anti-cavitation plate just forward of the exhaust port. It looks like its supposed to be there. About a 1/16 inch diameter hole. The stuff dripped down onto the prop for a while after pulling the boat out of the water. I ran the engine while still strapped to the trailer before actually taking her out. I'm thinking theres a seal out someplace but I'm cureous to know why theres a hole that oil can leak out of?

I'm not a wrench so I'll need to take her in for repaires if needed. If anyone has some info for me on this or needs to know more about it before answering let me know. email is ibee duke at hotmail dot com.

Thanks for any help.... Duke

Perfectly normal. It's just 2-cycle snot that forms from the mixture of unburned gas/oil and water.

Yep, it's the unburned goo that all 2 strokes produce unfortunately...

Thanks guys... but I'm still a little bewildered cuz in about two or three minutes after shutting it down it must have expelled near a cup of this "snot."
What should I do now? Top it off with fresh gear oil and go about life?
I like your answers so far :D

I just found this forum tonight... I should really say my wife found it... and I like it... a lot.

You should check your gear oil anyway, but it has nothing to do with what you are reporting. That part is normal, so don't be worrying about it. If you had taken it out and run it normal it probably wouldn't be anywhere near as much sloppage. It is the oil that you put in the gas, plus unburned gas from not being warmed up, plus unburned gas that they dump anyway, plus water, all emulsified together. Some of the oil that you put in the gas gets burned (smoke) and the rest goes straight through the engine and out the exhaust, which is what you are seeing. I say again, don't worry about it.

I have a 71 johnson 40hp and it dosen't do that. I used to get alot of oil or goo when I tank tested it and it ran bad. I did a carb rebuild, decarb and new plugs and it runs WAY better and next to no oil in the tank. You may want to try the decarb and other things i did. I also run premium gas and high dollar outboard oil now. good luck!

After a half hour - 45 minute spin around the lake my 57 18 horse leaks that disgusting goo for days afterwards. Next tank I'm going to switch it over to 50/1 full synthetic and see how things go. I'll need to keep the 56 10 horse on 24/1 since it has plain bearings but I'll switch it over to full synthetic too. Should be interesting.

Cheers..................Todd

I use full synthetic and still get goo... There's not a lot you can do about it... It's a normal by-product of a 2 stroke. Yes a cleaner engine will produce less but there will always be some...
