I am a first time boat owner. last weekend I traded my 4 wheelers for a fishing boat. I was doing 40 mph for a few hours. now the top speed is 10mph. I don't think enough gas is getting to the engine. I am thinking it is a throttle linkage or cable issue. can anyone give me some ideas?

I would pull off your engines shroud so that you have full view into the
openings of your carbs. With the motor off, either push your throttle or
gas peddle full bore and look into your carb openings. The valves looking
into the carbs should be wide open meaning most of the time there is no
problem with your linkage. Your should have a in-line gas filter on your motor,
if you do I would replace it for it is petty cheap!!! Pull your spark plugs and
take a look to make sure they look clean if not try to clean them up or either
replace them. Listen to your motor and it will tell you alot, my question to you
is when your only doing 10 mph is your motor spuddering like its starving or how does it sound compared to when it was doing 40 !!!!:

it sounds like I'm only giving it that much gas. it didn't putter or anything like that. my friend was actually driving it while i was up front when it happened, i just thought he was going slow. It sounded like it was running good just seemed like the throttle was low.

Make sure that your throttle valves ( butterflies) are wide open when your
at full throttle if not you may have a linkage problem, also check your fuel
lines and make sure your bulb is not colasped and that your air vent on you gas
tank is open.

my gas vent are open, and the bubbles seem to be fine. I am able to pump them like what seems normal. would this motor have any type of safety feature that cuts power in the event something else happened? like a water pump, or impeller?

Thank You for everyone replying

half of my plugs look like they could be pretty bad. cylinder #2 is especially bad. could this be a sign of something worse?

If the plugs look bad, they probably are, and yes, that can cause a cylinder to not make power. The logical thing to do would be to replace them. They are not going to make a hole in your budget.
