1995 70 hp water pump replacement

I am having a heck of a time getting on the new impeller,the johson parts kit came with a black nylon keyway and a white one, if I use the black one the impeller drops right on but has alot of play in it and if I use the white one I cant get the impeller to slide down over the key way ? when I took of the old impeller off I had to realy work on it to get it off any ideals would be great a picture would also help thanks.

Sand or file a small bevel on top of the key.

thanks captain I was thinking that .the keyway looks like a circle cut in 4 quarters and the key way is the shape of one quarter.

ok I did a bit more reaserch on this. The new johnson water pump and thermostat kit came with parts for 1988 and older, and 1988 and newer. The black key way is the one for 1988 and newer. Also the kit came with 2 O-rings ,one is light brown in color and the other is black. On the 1995 motors they no longer use the O-rings with the new kits. I was pulling my I-teeth out because when I pulled the water pump out it had all the O-rings and so on. I just thought if any one else dose this job on a 1995 motor the new kits have changed.
