Ummmmm,,, NO

It goes into my 5 gallon used oil jugs and then into the recycling bin at the parts store.

What would make you think someone would pitch 5 quarts of oil into the garbage:confused:

Well.....I know someone who used to that very thing...........I'm glad you don't!

I have the dipstick tube Mercruier unit, but don't like the fact that the heavy stuff still stays in oil pan and how long it takes.
So I get 2 plastic garbage bags put one inside each other so they are doubled up . I put them under the drain plug and hold them and drain right into the bags. Then hold them under the filter. It's amazing because you can pull these out of the tightest places because they can conform to any shape.
When your done just cut a corner out of the bag and let oil drain inot what ever recovery tank you have.
NO bilge clean up and all oil is changed !

Yeah, I used to do it that way with a few of my vehicles......until I was pulling it out of a "tight place" one day and caught it on a something sharp........made a nice little line on the floor before I saw it......

and of course, you have to get rid of the oily bag after that....:p

I use one of these, works well enough. It probably doesn't get it all out but close enough. I just used it to suck the auto trans fluid out of the pan of the 42 RE trans on my 98 Jeep (no drain plug). Sure beats taking a bath in trans fluid! Then you can remove the trans pan without spilling.

haha i know what you mean about a trans bath just replaced my pan on my 99 ram....

i just bought my first boat and tryed using a small hand pump with the 1/4" line down the dip stick tube on a 350 mercruiser...well that didnt work so im gunna be a hackabilly and use the garbage bags or maybe hold a funnel under the drain hole with a tube attached to it and run it thru the transom?

Sounds like a prescription for a mess....get a vaccum pump like the one in my pic....nice n easy no mess...and the next time you change the trans oil in the Ram...same thing...jack the left rear of the truck, that will cause the fluid to pool in the right front corner of the trans pan and you can suck most of it out that way...When I was back in my 20s I had more tolerance for messes...now I like to be a bit neater and don't want trans fluid in my hair!

BTW, oil in the bilge is a problem...if your bilge pump comes on and leaves a sheen on the water and the authorities see it...you can get fined...at least around here (LI Sound region).

I like the aux rubber hose and fitting it through the drain hole when emptying. pump would be fine as well... as long as it comes out the bottom. I hate the thought of using the dipstick and leaving the bottoms in the pan...

The 12 Volt pumps are by far the best way to go in my opinion. Warm the engine for a good 10 minutes, shut off, stick the IN tube down the dipstick hole, insert the OUT tube into a portable oil container, which is later taken to a mechanics to be recycled, then flip the ON switch. Takes about 3 minutes tops to drain 4 to 5 Liters. Removing the filter will get the remaining oil. I always put the high absorbent oil rags beneath the filter while doing this, as you do not want oil in your bildge. I feel that is an irresponsible way of doing things, as it WILL make its way into the Ecosystem.

Easy Breezy.

Is there anything wrong with just draining it into the bilge and putting a drain pan underneath the hole for the plug? I do that and then spray a $.99 can of carb cleaner in the bilge to clean up the oil. It works great for me, am I the only one?

Depends on where you doing your boating, here, between the Coast Guard and the local police boats, and the Harbormaster, sooner or later they will see that sheen in the water and you're busted. Do you really want to pump some oil in the water you can swim and fish in? I think not, just get any of the pumps and do it the right way.

I don't know if this was for me or not, the whole point of the carb cleaner is to get all of the oil out. Then it just evaporates away and I wipe the bilge w/ a grease rag. So I'm not concerned about getting oil into the water, just wanted to make sure the bilge area is oil resistant.

Re: how do you guys drain your engine oil?

funny story, have always changed my oil with a doubled up garbage bag, and never had any problems bigger than a few drops. 2 years ago I went out and splurged and bought one of those hand pumps. Worked like a dream right up to the point where I took the spout cork out inside the boat. I turned around to get out of the boat and my son (3 yr old) decided to follow me. Knocked over the pump container and spilled everywhere.

Still use the pump, but never open in boat.....lol

When I do my 1st oil change I am going to take the drain to the local hydrolic line shop and have one made so I can leave it hooked up and pull it ou tthe rear for drain...i'm sure it would not be more then $10-20

I have the manual pump that screws into the dipstick. I'd say it gets at least 95% of the oil out. I also change it the day I take boat out in the fall....it comes out a lot easier when it's warm.

Re: how do you guys drain your engine oil?

I use my uncle's pump. Its an old RV water pump attached to a 5gallon plastic container. The pump has a piece of PEX tubing that fits right over the dipstick tube. Connect it to the battery, and it sucks the oil right out. I'm sure it leaves a bit in there, but its no worse than anything else. I do mine in the fall immediately after hauling as well. The dirt is suspended in the oil, and its nice and thin so it comes out quickly.

There isn't the remotest chance I could ever drain mine out the bottom. I can't even see my pans unless I stand on my head, and use a flashlight and a mirror. Not a chance I could reach that drain plug if I wanted to.
