Hello all. I am new to the volvo engine. Just left the Force L Drive and Picked up a volvo. First off I dont know how to get the volvo number off of the motor but I found some old paper work in the boat that says its a AQ225E? with a 270 Lower unit. I have the tilt with the black box with 2 relys in it. I finally got the motor to spin but it only spins to put the motor down. If I push the switch for the tilt to come up nothing happens. I am lost as to what to do to fix this can anyone help me?

Thanks
Matt

You probably just have bad relays. There isn't a lot of troubleshooting information on the the mechanical lifts available, but here is a link to the OEM service manual for the 270 outdrive. Time to get your meter and follow the wiriing diagram. One note on the relays. They are not one for up and one for down. They are both needed to go both directions.
I have learned that just to save time, I keep 2 new relays handy. Replace and see if it works. If not dig deeper. The system is hard to understand, but once you understand it, it's quite simple. It's also in a tight package. DO NOT get Sierra, or Mallory, or any other aftermarket relays. They will not fit in the case.

Here, you might as well have a manual for your engine too.

This is the way it works on my Mercruiser tilt/trim assembly. One solenoid is for up and the other is for down.

That is EXACTLY how a Volvo Penta 270 mechanical lift mechanism DOESN'T work. You are comparing apples to oranges.

Don S. really knows a lot about the mechanical workings and I would absolutely follow his advice. He has helped me thru a lot of problems and can get you thru this problem. Don't really know about Volvo's and as I said this is how my Mercruiser works as I understand it. Good luck!

I just went through this with Don and you are lucky it's still wired correctly. You could take his advice and get a couple relays for spares, take the top off the box and have a partner turn the switch up and down, while you feel and listen to which one is not working. Then switch it like you would a distributer cap; wire for wire. Also in the manual, it recommends that you install a overload circuit breaker between the ground wire to the box. And again, "thank you, Don!" for setting me straight with my problem with blowing fuses in my '84 Capri a couple of days ago. I was bone-headed but Don was right

Figured out the problem! After spending many hours on this thing I decided to take a look at the switch. I pulled the trim panel off and there was a wire just chilling there. Put it back on the switch and up she went. Thanks for all the advice guys!
