Hey ya'll thought you might like this bridge not sure if it is a popular thing any where else in the world but it is kinda unique in my neck of the woods it swings out of the way
The swing bridges are all over the place down here in southern Louisiana on the smaller bayous (creeks) and on a few of the larger ones. I cross 3 of them on the way to work, go under 1 of them when I launch my boat from downtown Slidell.
I'm from the province of Nova Scotia in Canada. The province consists of the mainland peninsula and an island.
The strait between them has a land causeway built of large rock that is 4500 ft long. In the causeway is a swing bridge that is 308 ft long that opens for the passage of large shipping vessels. (The strait is 217 ft deep at its deepest point)
I've never sween one before It would be even better if they could spin 360 degrees. Then if you get on one, and then decide you are going the wrong way, they could simply swing you around . . . Dead easy and safer than a U-turn . . .
Actually, it is a very popular type of bridge. Even the large ones need only a few hp to move. They are well balanced.
There is one in NYC that is 6 lanes wide.
Never seen one like that. Most the bridges around here are the ole' draw bridge type. There is one monolithic old train tressel that articulates in the middle to open up both sides of the river though. Sure is a pain when its closed because few boats can slip under hre low clearance.
I fished underneath one three days ago. Our local fish and game reporter did a story on great fishing under a railroad swing bridge in a place called the rigolets. I caught a bunch of hardheads and a speckled trout - that was it! Dang! I hate it when that happens! To make things worse, the guy next to me caught a 30 pound drum!
