Has anybody used the Stowaway marine dual purpose battery instead of separate starting and deep cycle batteries? I want to keep weight at a minimum at the stearn but I don't want to sacrifice battery life for the trolling motor then can't get the outboard cranked.

I have a Autozone Duralast Dual Purpose battery. Its got 1000 cranking amps with deep cycle capabilities. Works fine for my Baja. I can run the sterio (4 speakers, 10 inch sub/amp) for 3 or 4 hours and the boat will start just fine.

What kind of trolling motor, what kind of big motor, and how do you use the trolling motor. IMO, these would have a definite impact on my decision.

One option you have though is to go with the dual purpose and take along a booster pack. One of those rechargeable batteries with the jumper cables built in.

Why not use a Deep cycle for both? The weight difference is less than 5 lbs depending on the battery manufacturer.

A grp 24 AC Delco Voyager deep cycle weighs 45 lbs. The Stowaway Grp 24 dual purpose is 47 lbs.

I may have misunderstood, but I think he wants only one battery on the boat and that battery would run the big motor and the trolling motor too.

Re: Stowaway marine dual purpose vs. starting and deep cycle batteries

The outboard motor will be a 25hp either 2-stroke or 4-stroke and the trolling motor will be a Minn Kota Edge 40 lbs thrust. The original motor on the boat was a Merc 40hp 2-stroke which weighed around 142 lbs. A Merc 25hp 4-stroke weighs around 157 lbs. If I get the 4-stroke I have to be careful about the weight of the other things that will be at the stearn. A 25hp 2-stroke will weigh around 115 lbs. which will help in deciding on the other things at the stearn. The marine batteries are around 45-47 lbs so if I get the 4-stroke I would like to get by with only one battery if I could troll all day and still get the outboard cranked. When I had the Merc 40hp 2-stroke I had a starting battery and a deep cycle battery.

I understood him completely. Go up a size to say a grp. 27 Deep cycle and install a battery isolator. That way you could use it for both motors.

I have no problems starting my 200HP with deep cycle. Should be a piece of cake for a 25hp

I thought a battery isolator was used with multiple batteries and one motor/alternator? How does it work with only one battery and either an outboard or a trolling motor?

I'd run 2 batteries if you are going to be using a trolling motor along with the outboard. If a single battery starts to go bad, it could be quickly drained by the trolling motor... stranding you

If you are worried about stern weight move the trolling motor battery and other weight (anchor, tackle, cooler) toward the bow for better weight distribution.
