I have an old 9.5 evinrude that i cannot identify, and it needs a new carb float bad. The float is a large rectangle block and I have no idea where to find one. This one is cork and has become very heavy. I would like to know where i could get a plastic one.

Can you post a model number off the transom ID plate or from the welsh plug (on the power head)??

Re: evinrued 9.5 question

The 9.5 motors range from 1964 through 1973 and are identified by model numbers found on the the port transom brackets on 1" x 3" plates or on nickel-sized welch plugs on the engine blocks.

The carburetor floats are made of cork and are sealed with shellac. The solvent for shellac is alcohol, so the cork floats don't last very long in the new improved government pushed fuel.

I am not aware of any substitute, so the best that I know of is the replacement part #379154 that comes with the OEM kit # 382048. If you find a better float, please let me know so that I can use them.

I would think you could remove the shellac with alcohol dry it in the sun and then seal with epoxy or something resistant to gasahol.

I am not aware of any epoxy that cannot be degraded by alcohol. I will await the information.

Not that I know of. I just replace them when they fail. I was hoping that steelespike knew of something.

Re: evinrued 9.5 question

I was under the impression that the dope used to paint model airplanes of the R/C variety is resistant to all kinds of fuel. Butyrate dope like Sig Supercoat. I've heard that works well but I have no direct experience. I do believe though that once a float has gotten heavy and sunk it's done. No amount of drying will get it back to its original weight.
I have an almost new cork float out of an 18 horse parts motor I got. I'm going to get some dope and paint it up and try it and see what happens.

Cheers................Todd
