Hello,

I am new to this forum and looking to seek advice. I need an engine for a boat I just bought. I found one about an hours drive from where I live. It is a 1986 evinrude 150 HP w/25" shaft. The boat is a Sea Ray seville bow rider, it is rated for up to 150hp.

Price of engine is $1600.00, he will provie 30 day warranty if i pay that price.

No warranty if I haggle price done.

Questions i should ask before buy: Please help!!!

Re: need advice

You want to see a compression test,
and to see the compression guage with your own eyes.
Preferably above 90 and all within 15psi of ea other.

You want to see the lower gearbox oil to check that it is not creamy from water intrusion.

Then haggle the price down.
$1400 AND 30 day warrentee is haggling.

I got a 1995 commercial looper J150 for $1800 w/ controls, cables and tach....from a marina.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

Is the 25" shaft length the correct one for that boat?

BTW- I think the price is a bit too high for a 21+ year old motor. What does NADA say? I think $700-$800 is a better price, w/o the warantee.

Re: need advice

I personally think the price is too high. Maybe not based on what your alternatives are, and what it looks like (well used vs. "like new"). I would definitely bargain price, but insist on the 30 day warranty even with a discount. If you get a cheaper price w/o the warranty, you really haven't gotten a cheaper price. I'd also recommend the warranty in writing and I'd want it to be "no questions asked" except for obvious physical damage.
