Hi, on my second boat is this carburated engine reliable? I know fuel injection is great technology but is this a keeper? What is the perspective?
Thanks

on a boat the simplier the better IMHO. Ill take a carb or even better a mechanical injected diesel anyday over a electronicly controlled motor on a boat. A car or truck is another deal.

the 5.7L/260 HP is another one of those power packages that is as solid as they get............
But the reality is.....
Is it's all in how the previous owners took care of the thing.

I totally agree with both of the above posts. I've owned both the carb and EFI versions of the Merc 5.7 and had way more trouble with the EFI (it was bought brand new, BTW). Carbs can be adjusted easily and without professional help.
My current boat has twin carb 5.7 Crusaders and they run like clockwork.

Take care of it and it will take care of you...
