I'm going to take a look at a 1977 40 hp Johnson 2-stroke that is for sale and was wondering what the approximate weight of this motor would be? The motor is still on a boat and I will be able to test drive it tonight, but would only be buying the motor if the deal goes through. If I do buy it, there will only be myself and the seller to remove the motor and put it in the back of my truck. Seems like two guys should be able to do it without a lift, but wanted to check first.

Thanks.

when I got my 1979 35 Johnson the seller helped me load it no sweat. when i got home I had to move it by myself. I weigh 160# and moved it but only about 10 feet set it down and rest until i got it to the stand I had to get help to put it on the stand though

Thanks. That's what I figured. Once I get it home I have a lift I can use to get it out of the truck. Hope it checks out because it seems like a really good deal. Seller says it runs great, is willing to put it in the water, will let me do a compression check, and his starting price is $150

Re: 1977 40hp Johnson weight

When I was 14, We had a 62'- 40hp manual start Evinrude, (139lbs) I believe? I used to carry the powerhead, while Dad held the skeg, up the stairs from the basement, to the water barrel in the spring, & out, and back down, in the fall, and I was only about 150lbs at the time. I would think it would be less then 160lbs, because with newer technology, they're usually lighter.

Check at the NADA site, they may have the actual outboard weight there.

Thanks for the NADA tip. Looks like its around 130-140 pounds. Shouldn't be a problem.

On the NADA site it lists a value of $50. I know that NADA prices on boats and outboards are wrong, but it got me thinking. If it runs good and looks ok (Seller says its in great shape), is $150 good, bad or ugly for a price? Judging by what people ask on craigs list $150 seems like it would be a good deal provided it is as good as described.

IMO, $150 is a bargain for a good running 40hp motor. ;)

Yep. That was my assessment too, but that darn NADA quote being $50 threw me for a loop. I'd heard that NADA was off when it came to boats and boat motors, but I didn't realize it could be that far skewed.

Re: 1977 40hp Johnson weight

Looking at some web sites, it may be a 1976 motor because it looks like in 77' Johnson didn't have a 40. The seller is sure it is a 40 and said he thought it was a 77' because he believed it came with the boat which is a 77. In any case, that old becomes on-condition anyway and if it looks good I snatch it.
