Hi, my first post here ..
I own a fiberglass boat 12.6 length..
With this engine 9.5 Johnson serial #9R-73
I believe I should plane or be close to it but ....

It almost feels like it kinda either dig in the water almost like sinking the back of the boat ...
Engine sounds fine starts at first try and good at idle but ... been new to outboards I would like to know what should I look for faulty things in it ...
Boat + me about 200 6gl tank half way or second bench trolling motor and battery...
Any help / advice appreciated ..
I am pretty handy with 2 stroke engines ...
Whats best way to clean carb ... tnx..
Thats where I would start ty

Re: 9.5 Johnson serial #9R-73

Start by setting the trim so that the bottom of the motor is closer to the bottom of the boat's transom.

Find the knob #64 near the bottom of the starboard side of the transom bracket and push it in and turn it. Try two slots out first, then experiment.

There is also a "shallow water drive link #29" that holds the motor out from the transom; make sure that it is flipped out of the way for normal running.

See the parts catalog diagrams for your 1973 motor at the following link, then navigate to the "Stern Bracket" diagram for the parts with which we will be concerned. http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e

Re: 9.5 Johnson serial #9R-73

The proper position for the A/V plate is parallel to the water at WOT. The A/V plate should be in line with the bottom of the boat on the 9.5 and aligned with it. Most older boats had a transom that was not perpendicular to the bottom of the boat, many by 11 degrees.

BTW, Check to be sure that the bottom of the boat is not hooked.

rgr that and ty again ..
I did notice the angle on it...
I will try to add a panel in the back in a way to make it parallel to bottom..
By the way bottom of boat looks ok ...
One more thing ...
Is there a rule of thumb for the knob to adjust ... mmh the gas for low and high speed right next to the gear level under the choke level??
Right now it is set at 3/4 of the way I think it is either 5 or 7??
Thanks in advance

Have you checked compression? Are you getting two good sparks? If yes then clean the carb.

How do you check compression is there a tool for it ??
Couple of guys said that it feels fine but never really tested it ...
As of spark I just need to remove the plugs and try to start engine is it correct??Like you would do on motorbikes 2 stroke engines??
Thanks for prompt answers guys

Re: 9.5 Johnson serial #9R-73

Oh hey sorry ...
I was out ..
Man I was finally getting some planning going with adjusting the level for low or high speed till I think the manual starter spring broke.. either that or the pin that holds the starter rod that holds the rope..
I am trying right now to see if I can pull it a part..
One more thing..I notice my boat kinda runs little sideways..
I though I read somewhere that there is a way to fix that is that true??
I will keep you guys update on the trouble with the starter...
Ty again Nicola

Re: 9.5 Johnson serial #9R-73

You can just make up a rope and handle to use on the upper side of the flywheel until you get that spring fixed. If the roll pin that holds the pinion at the top slips out, you will just need to rewind the spring and replace the roll pin. The problem is much more complicated if the spring is broken.

The motor needs to be as perfectly centered as possible, measuring from the far outside top at the stern to the transom brackets. Unlike many newer motors, there is no built in adjustment like a trim tab that can offset torque so you have to get the motor very well centered and perpendicular.

Re: 9.5 Johnson serial #9R-73

The starter springs on the 9.5 motors often break because they are tightened to the 20-1/2 turns prescribed in the service manual on page 7-4.

Subject to OMC Service Bulletin #1276, The number of turns was reduced to 18.
