Just got a 1963 Alumacraft Queen Merrie with a Johnson electramatic super sea horse outboard 75HP. It has been garage kept for 15-20 years and well maintained prior to that. This my first boat, so I'm looking for some tips on what I need to look at, check, or replace on the motor before I fire it up. I found muffs so I could try to start it, but don't see where the intakes are.

Here is a link to some pics:

you can't start that one on muffs needs to be in the water or a big barrel. there is a link on here about awakening a sleeping outboard. read it first.

regular flush muffs won't work on that engine. the water intake is located on the bottom/side of the exhaust outlet-just above the prop

Thanks

there was some time ago, a type of water hook-up to run those engines on a water hose like flush muffs but, I have not seen them in a long time.

You could always try your local Napa auto parts store. I just got a carb kit there today for my 3hp 1959 Johnson. When i went in to the store yesterday I asked if the guy if they stocked marine parts and they said some but they had a lot at their warehouse. So he got out the big marine parts catalog they had behind the counter and started looking though it. I just asked him if i could look at the catalog and he said fine. It was full of stuff. I found what i was looking for and they ordered it and it came today on their parts truck. I was figuring it would of taken forever to find the parts i needed but they had them in stock, just at their warehouse.

Attached is a photo of the water intakes relative to the water pump. You're best to put it in a drum of water up to at least the water pump level since it's not self-priming.

Chops,
Could you post a photo of the steering rod attachment in your picasa album? I want to change mine to something more original. Your's might be original.

I'll see if I can get a pic for you tonight. I found the old school version of flush muffs for the motor. It goes under the forward intake.

Re: 1963 Johnson 75HP Super Sea Horse

I have the same motor in a 1962 i have ran it a couple of summers now and it does pretty good i would check and make sure the electric shift works before i went to far with anything else. just hook a battery up and shift into forward and reverse and make sure there is resitance you dont need the motor running just turn the key to the on position. i called around until i found a boat mechanic that knew what he was doing with this type of motor because most wouldnt even talk to me they just wanted to sell me a new motor. but anyway what i was told was that most but not all parts are available. i also run a 40/1 mix 1 pint to 5 gal.the book calls for 24/1 but mechanic says 40/1 is ok also make sure to use corect oil in lower unit johnson premium is the factory spec.type. it uses alot of gas but was told this is normal . was also told to keep idol down as slow as posable to keep from tearing up the electric shift .also make sure gaskets are on screws for drain and vent for oil change on lower unit. also cooling water doesnt pee out like a modern outboard its more of a splatter along with exhaust gas. i hope this helps some.

I have learned more from this one post here than anywhere else. Great information, especially from the FAQ referenced earlier. More to come as I probably won't put her in until next season. Lots of work to do till then.

Re: 1963 Johnson 75HP Super Sea Horse

I'm running this same motor on my 1963 Dunphy. It sat in storage from 1973 to 2005 when I rescued it. I rebuilt the carb, changed the fuel filter, replaced points, plugs, condenser and spark plug wires, replaced the impeller and changed the gear oil in the lower unit. She fired right up and has been running ever since.

I got parts and a lot of help from Doug at Vintage Outboard, www.vintageoutboard.com. I would love to find the flush attachment that goes with this motor. Make sure you keep a spare tank of fuel in the boat, this old girl drinks it pretty fast.

OK, so I fired it up and it ran pretty well. I need to do a tune up but nothing major. One thing I noticed when I shut the motor off and it was cooling down; some grey looking ooze was coming out of the forward and reverse inlets dripping onto the prop. Is this normal or do I need to look into this further?

Re: 1963 Johnson 75HP Super Sea Horse

That ooze is likely just unburned fuel mixed with the water. That engine doesn't have an exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR) like most modern engines. Fuel that builds up in the crankcase at low speeds is just dumped down the exhaust. If you idle into port chances are you'll leave a trail of oil behind you when you trailer away. It's normal. There's a small hole under the anti-cavitation plate above the prop (shown below) where this ooze drips out, unless it's plugged with dirt.

I have just got one of these outboards, and i am new to boating, does anyone have an instruction manual, or any tips on running this engine?

Thanks in advance

Andy

Re: 1963 Johnson 75HP Super Sea Horse

first off check out ur electric shift items in that motor and make sure there fine. its really expensive to repair them.

then check compression see if the motor is good

of course chnage impeller so u wont overheat

most likely a carb rebuild and fuel pump rebuild be good

and any other thing that come with that. gear oil spark checking etc

id run it 24:1 to be on the safe side
