Yamaha 200 hp 1993 wiring

I have a 1993, 200 hp Yamaha ob. It was wired by a local mechanic about 2 years ago when he put a battery maintainer on. Now if I put both large gauge wires on the terminal the trim goes up. To get it back down I have to change polarity on the battery. This happens automatically. I cannot get any ignition power at all at this point. Help. The boat is on a boat lift in my dock and I cannot get it to a ramp.

Re: Yamaha 200 hp 1993 wiring

This may help: Remove engine cowling. From the tilt/trim motor, follow the thick wire coming out the top going into the engine. THis wire will go up to the tilt/trim relays. A red lead should connect to one relay, and a green lead should connect to another. Disconnect both from the relays.

This should solve the immediate problem.

While you are there, disconnect the battery power from the relays.

Oh, and don't take it back to the same local mechanic in the future. :)

Thanks so much. I'll try this in the morning. I have no ground at the ignition at all. Will hooking up the larger wires ground the system?

One correction to my initial response: the thick black wire coming from the tilt/trim motor will have two smaller wires inside, one with green shielding and one with Blue shielding. Disconnect these from the relays in the engine compartment.

"Will hooking up the larger wires ground the system?"

I don't understand this question you are currently asking. I would say first and foremost, disconnect the tilt/trim motor at the relays. The cranking battery wires should be connected in the proper fashion.

The tilt/trim relays are designed to alternate polarity so that the motor either goes up or down - just what you are having to do at the cranking battery.

Re: Yamaha 200 hp 1993 wiring

At the moment the 2 wires coming from the engine are larger gauge wires and when I hook up both wires to the cranking battery the Trim motor lifts the engine up. I must quickly get the Negative wire off the battery or it would burn the Trim motor up when it reaches the top because it keeps running. Also I have no Ground at the ignition system. I cannot find the ground for the ignition system and I was wondering if I disconnect the solenoid controlling the Trim motor and then hook up both wires if that should give me a Ground at the ignition, fuel tank, starter, and choke system. I understand I likely need a new solenoid for the Trim motor because it?s stuck in the on position. Likely the points have welded themselves to each other I would suppose. I was unable to work on the problem yesterday because of storms most of the day. Thanks so much for you're help.

Re: Yamaha 200 hp 1993 wiring

It seems like the tilt/trim relays would fail to safe, but maybe not. There should be 2 of them, and possibly only 1 of them is bad (if bad at all).

But the larger issue is the negative ground to the system. At the cranking battery, you should have thick wire on the (+) terminal and a thick wire on the (-) terminal, just like in your car.

One bad electrical connection in the system can cause havoc to all other systems. I think you have several issues going on and I'd say that if you are mechanically inclined, then order a factory service manual from Yamaha. If not, take it to a reputable shop. I got my service manual in about 5 days from Yamaha. You need a wiring diagram so you can properly check all subsystems, etc.

Re: Yamaha 200 hp 1993 wiring

I ordered it this morning. I'm going to re-wire the whole thing and start new. At the moment I have no ground at my ignition and instruments. Everything else works, i.e. horn, bilge, live well, depth gauge, etc. The only thing I can't find a ground for is the system going to the gauges and throttle i.e. fuel level, trim level, starter, tilt/trim switch, choke. Thanks for your help. I do appreciate it. I don?t understand what has happened except possibly someone was trying to get my batteries I guess, yet the wing nuts were on tight and no broken wires found. Thanks again.
