Outboard motors comparison - Opinions wanted

Good day, I prensently own a 1981 Johnson 9.9 hp which is a dream OB for fishing. Mint condition, few hours usage, Idles very slow, super quiet, no vibrations, no shaking when idling ... the ole works. My son wants it ... so I would have to shop for another one either for myself or help him get one.

I have 2 options at the moment: a 2004 Merc 15 hp and a 1999 Johnson 9.9 hp (both 2 cycle). Question is: do I expect the same overhall performance from either of these two OB's in comparison to the 1981 Johnson I am using now ???

Thank you

I guess you dont like Merc's ?? LOL The temptation to upgrade to 15 hp is a motivation. But I once owned a 1979 Johnson 15 hp ... It idled rough and shaky. I donno what to expect from a 15hp Merc. Could it have something to do with 15 hp's being boosted 9.9 (any brand) ??

As for the 1999 Johnson 9.9 hp I also dont know if they are basicaly mecanicaly the same as the 216 cc 1981 I own at the moment.

I do plan to hand one to my son since I will use his boat on his lake just about every summer weekend no I dont mind suppling the motor. Since you both know I also own a 15 hp Force ... I could hand him down that one ... but this is also an OB that idles roughly (does everything else fine) and I do troll 90 % of my fishing time. Nevertheless I will not get rid of the Force until I find replacement.

From your feedback I would guess I am reading the 1999 Johnson 9.9 would be similar to my 1981 model and the Merc 15 hp would be a shaking rattle & roll OB like the previous OMC 15 hp I once owned ? LOL LOL

Now do I expect the same pushing power from an 1999 OMC as I do with the 1981 ? Are they Hp rated the same way ?

the 81 was rated at the power head, the 99 is rated at the prop, so it should give a little more power. i would expect the 99 to run better than the 81, as it has a better designed carb. still with the low speed adjustment, so you can get it set where you want it.

I have had nothing but Mercs (save one odd Sea King and Mariner) and will probably continue to do so. But, I would recommend the Johhny for two reasons.
You already have one and like it.
2 Stroke Mercs don't like to idle all day (generally speaking).

I own both a merc and an Evinrude kicker. They are both fairly old (mid 70s) and both run well. Although I personally like my current merc a little better than the evi, I totally agree with others who say stay with what you know. I've had the merc a lot longer than the evi, and feel quite a bit more comfortable working on it.
