Didnt mean to post this thread twice, but I figured I should have put it here in the first place:

Hey. Looking to buy our first boat. We just looked at a 1999 Glastron 195 SX today. Had the volvo penta 190 hp 4.3L inboard/outboard.

Seemed to run great and have plenty of power at the lake today.
The seller is asking 9,200 but comes withOUT a bimini top or tower.
He is including a set of decent skis, 6-8 cheap-o-lifevests, a kneeboard, and two tow ropes.

I need some opinions...Those that own a similar boat, would you recomend it? If you pack is with 6-8 people, does the power lack when pulling a skier?
Should we look further into a 5.0L? Hows the fuel economy / gas mileage of this engine? Is it reliable? Need LOTS of opinions.

we want to make an offer, just want some more info to back it up.
also the boat was in great condition, no major visable defects, no tears in uphostery.... All stock. No hour meter. everything works.
main problem is that it lacks a bimini top, and were seeing about $300-450 to have one installed.

How fair is this price? ($9,200) Nada says 8,725 with all basic accessories the boat includes. (not vests, skiis, etc)
ALSO - this boat is in Arizona, that might alter the market value.

GLASTRON OWNERS SPEAK OUT!! need some opinions!
thanks everyone!

in this buyers market, $9,200 for a 10 year old boat is high. true it is in Az. 8 people may be pushing it hard.

edited years.

You can place a counter offer maybe for 7,500 or 8,000 of course that depends on the overall condition of the boat start from upholstery, dings, cracks, engine, i mean everything. Regarding the tube with 6 to 8 peoples onboard YES its too much, remember, If you want to ski or go tubing its ok to go down 2 pitch in the prop to gain some RPMS.... Hope this helps:rolleyes::

"6-8 people" can mean different things - two parents and a bunch of little kids? Mid-life overweight beer drinking buddies? Makes a BIG difference in that boat with that engine. I think you'd be OK if it's some adults and some smaller kids except for slalom skiers or other hard initial pulls. That's not a very heavy boat, assuming it's not waterlogged at all - I'd weigh it before dropping $9k on it.

As was said, if you're willing to sometimes change props then you can have a watersports prop and a cruising/all-purpose prop and do better. Maybe put the lower pitch prop on when loaded down a bit and doing watersports.

I think you're a bit low on the bimini cost, but we don't have one so i wouldn't know for sure.

Not sure on the price - but assume asking price is higher than reallity price in today's market. IF it's truely in great shape, that's a big factor in my book.

Is this the boat you are looking at?

http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/boa/865388936.html

If yes, this thing has been on Craigslist for a couple months now. It caught my eye because it is in my neighborhood (Anthem), but I always felt it was overpriced. Don't worry about making a lower offer because I suspect the boat will still be there for another couple months. Boats are not selling that well in Phoenix right now, and the owners may be trying to unload the boat because of the financial crisis.

Also, there are some good marine mechanics in the Phoenix area. Be sure to have the boat looked over by a pro before making an offer.

Re: 99 Glastron Value + info (potential buy)

One other thing about that boat. The add says the price has been reduced. I can tell you that the price has always been $9,200. I stumbled across this boat because it came up when I searched craigslist for the key word "outboard", and it continues to come up each time I do the search.

I am a Glastron owner, but mine is 30 years old. I love my boat, and I think you will be very happy with a Glastron. When I bought my boat I overpaid for it because I was stupid and I did not know anything about boats. Fortunately I was able to pay cash for my boat, and the boat was in good condition. I guess over paying for a good boat is better than over paying for a bad boat. Keep an eye on craigslist, and keep "V8" in your search criteria. Something good and cheap will come up before spring hits, but then you will have to beat me to the seller.

If I guessed the correct boat, then I am also going to guess you had your test drive at Lake Pleasant. Test conditions at Lake Pleasant in October are very different than actual conditions in the spring/summer. You probably had fairly calm water yesterday, but between the months of March-August you can expect a much rougher ride. The only way to see full throttle during the spring/summer months is to get to the lake very early or stay very late. Conditions are usually so rough that you are doing good if you can get into the 25-30 mph range. The only reason I mention this is because your test drive may have occurred under the best conditions, and you did not get a chance to see how the boat performs in normal conditions. Pleasant is my primary lake, but I have observed similar water conditions at Bartlett, Canyon, and Saguaro.

The ad says 225 HP. Is it fuel injected or carb (carb is 190)? I wanted FI but it's next to impossible to find on small inexpensive I/O (I bought an 08 Glastron GT 185).

Anyway, FI was (IIRC) about $2K more than carb when available. Something to consider with the price.

Aquaski, your on the money, thats the boat.
It was at pleasant, but the water, especially with the storm coming in, was fairly rough, and I liked the ride much better than a 19ft Mariah I rode in a few weeks ago.
The price was "reduced" 200 dollars in the last week. I have thought about the prop idea and switching it out, we will probably do taht being that will want a stainless steal one anyway, and were not worried about top speed, its all about water-sports. Thanks for the advice. Ill keep everyone updated.

Also, we found that it is a 4.3GL, a carbed engine, and the guy "was not aware" that wasnt fuel injected. It is not 225hp, its 190.

Re: 99 Glastron Value + info (potential buy)

Time to revive this thread.

We never went further with this boat, for several reasons.
-He was "unaware that the boat was not fuel injected when we questioned him" yet he seemed to know quite a bit about boats. Seems strange.
-Does not have an hour meter.
-Does not have a bimini top.
-Does not have a wakeboard tower.
-Comes with only a pair of skis.

The boat is now down to $8,800. The seller has made a few calls to us regarding our current status on the offer.
Need to know what to do next from you experienced buyers/sellers out there.

BTW, its in great condition for its age, very little scratches, ran fine. Next move?
Thanks all.

Re: 99 Glastron Value + info (potential buy)

Offer $7500 and tell him that's your best offer considering your gonna have to spend more on getting upgraded stuff for it. ie....new bimini, comfortable life vests, all new safety gear and such.

As far as it being a Glastron Sx195.....You'll love it
I do have a second prop for water sports. It's a Ballistic 17 pitch SS.
Talk about ripping arms out of their sockets at take off.:D
For cruising, I use the 21 pitch. 50mph GPS:eek:

Re: 99 Glastron Value + info (potential buy)

I agree that $8,800 is too much. I have been watching that one on Craigslist because it is located in my neighborhood. Not sure where the seller lives exactly, but Anthem is only a few miles wide, and I live in the center of the community, so I have to be real close. I also noticed the recent price reduction. The seller has been advertising that boat for a long time now, and it is obvious that he has no takers. The fact that he is calling you for a status indicates that he is motivated, so let him know what price will motivate you. I think TD is right to look at a $6k price point. The pics of the boat look good, but it is almost a decade old.

Re: 99 Glastron Value + info (potential buy)

It looks like the original Craigslist link I posted on 10/5 has expired. Below is a recent link with the updated price.

http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/boa/924434300.html

It is a good looking boat, but $8,800 still seems too high.

For the fun of it I went to NADA to see if I agree with the sellers claim "Way below NADA price!! ". I don't have all the details about the boat, but with my limited information I am came up with an average value of $6,300.

Re: 99 Glastron Value + info (potential buy)

I just sold our 99 glastron about 4 months ago, we sold it for $10,200. It had brakes, new rubber in May, 5.0 with alpha, wake tower, bimini, custom trailerable cover, and wake tower and a few cheap life vest. The motor just hit the 300 hour mark, it was very clean. I will try and post some pics.
Dave, it Edmond Ok
ps, hope this helps in some way, sorry for the crappy pic, but I have yet to figure out the other way to do it.

Cub3, time to play hard ball. It is not a sellers market and the worse time of the year. You must be able to walk away without looking back if it does not go your way. I would call him and let him know you can have $6000 to $6500 (your decision) in cash tomorrow if he is ready to sell it. He will either make the deal, counter or laugh. Sadly for the seller and lucky for you, you are in complete control and real buyers are far and few in between at this point. If he doesn't make the deal you will probaby see the ad continue for a long time. Good luck Ike

Re: 99 Glastron Value + info (potential buy)

okboating. that just justified my price range, you easily have $3-4000 in upgrade on that boat. 1,500 for tower, 2,000 for custom trailer.
