Just picked up a boat about three weeks ago and started it up the other day. It took a while to start and when it finally did it took a lot of coaxing to keep it going. After it warmed up, it would only stay running if the idle was ~2,000+ RPM. Spec for that engine is 775 +/- 25. Every time I turned the idle screw back to lower the idle, it would sputter and nearly stall. I left it alone for about 4 hours and came back later that day. I tried to start it again and this time it started up with little hesitation. I was able to lower the idle this time but got a stranger problem. It was idling at ~1,500 RPM but after about 5 seconds would go down to ~800. A few seconds later, back up to 1,500, then again back down to 800. This would continue indefinitely. Can anyone think what might be causing this problem? Since I got it used, I can't say how it ran prior or if any work was ever done to the engine. Any input would be appreciated.
