Do I expect Stabil in my OB gas tank to decarb pistons and rings as Merc Qwickleen claims to do ?

I also use small engine tune up additive periodicaly, what does this product do for my OB ?

Re: Stabil Vs Qwickleen

As far as I know, Stabil's only real use is in keeping fuel fresh during prolonged storage. I don't believe the manufacturer claims anything else. If you want a non-OEM product that decarbs, keeps rings free, etc., look in to Sea Foam. It has been around forever and in my opinion, actually works as described. I use it and just picked up a dozen cans yesterday because a local store had it on sale.

Tx 109jb, I dont recall seeing this product in local stores where I live, may be under a different name, or I ll check with local Merc dealer since they may carry this Qwickleen product. I do use another additive called 'Small engine tune up" every spring first gas tank. not sure if it deals with carbon build up ...

Have a great day

Stabil and Qwikleen are two different products that perform two different functions. They are not comparable products. Stabil is a fuel stabilizer as mentioned. Qwikleen is a fuel system cleaner and decarb agent. SeaFoam would be the equivalent of Qwikleen.

Stabil isn't a decarbonizer...however, they came out with a new "marine" version last yr that also has "cleaners" in it. They might help keep an engine clean but probably won't remove heavy stuff.

Re: Stabil Vs Qwickleen

That new "marine" formula is more for treating ethanol in the fuels and to keep fuel from separating, as etahnol fuel tends to do. They are trying to compete with Star-Tron, but I don't think it does as much a Star-Tron.

Anybody ever use the new marine Stabil?

Star-Tron is great stuff!! Keeps fuel stabilized and keeps it from separating as well as makes any water in the fuel chemically able to burn. I think also cleans the fuel system as it moves through and burns, keeping carbon build up down. Not a heavy decarber like Sea Foam, just a maintenance decarber, like Yamaha's ring free.

That's the only place I was able to find some in Canada... pretty expensive too, 15$ for the pint size and 80$ for the gallon, but it's does work great!

I assume you are in the US.

I'm currently using the Marine Stabil, but I can't tell you how well it works for a year or two. It is about $18 CDN at CTC.

About $6 to $7 US for a pint of Seafoam is normal near me (Northern Illinois). I got mine on sale at a store called "Big R" which is like a Farm and Fleet.

I'll be coming in Northern NY at the border. Thanks for the info though. Hopefully I can save some $$$ and get several cans while down there.

I compared the "marine" Sta-bil to the regular yesterday at Pep Boys. Seemed to me to be the same stuff with slightly different wording on the container. Marketing gimmick? Not sure, but I think I'll pass ;)

I buy it at west marine. What it is advertised to have is more fuel system cleaners and corrosion inhibitors than the original (which is the proven no hype top dog in stabilizers). As far as startron is concerned, I bought a gallon of the stuff and it was a waste of time and money. A totally hyped product in my opinion. It does NOT clean or dissolve dirty fuel systems with "enzyms" as advertised. The only place startron works is on perfectly clean fuel systems that otherwise run fine without additives. This might give a clue...they have several different "treatments" and they ALL share the same exact advertising on what each does. Only the labels are different. Hype, hype, hype.

$8 a can in northern NY just when you cross the border in Ogdensburg. (Don't know the store as a buddy picked it up for me yesterday)
