I have a 1990 3hp Johnson model#J3bresr. I had no spark, changed the coils and now have spark but need to set the timing. Can anyone help me with this problem?

Re: how to set the timing

you should have a flywheel key on your crank shaft. There is a little tab on your flywheel key and that will line up with the back of your point and that is when you will set your point gap...then you turn your crankshaft 180 degrees I believe where your key is lined up with the back of the other point, then set the gap on that one. The gap is probably .020 - .025

I hope that makes sense.

Re: how to set the timing

I happen to make the timing fixtures for precision setting of the points with a light or meter. But you don't need it for a one-time job. Just set the points gap to .020" at their widest opening.

More important is the coil-to-magnets clearance. You must adjust the coils in or out till they are even with the machined posts where they are mounted. I make the tool for that too, but you don't need that one either.

To F_R: I like having the tools to do precision work. Is there a place that I could buy them? If so, please send a PM.

I am not stealing the post and this can be moved if so, but how do you use a light fixture to set your timing. I know there are people that do this and I was wondering how to do it. And actually the author of this thread might find this useful.

thanks

To Joho5: Timing with a light is explained on page 4-9 of your 9.5 factory service manual, but it requires the special tool 383602.

Thanks so much, set the points to .020 and rebuild the carb while I was at it. My motor now runs like new. All with Duck season a week away. Next year I wont wait until the last minute to bust out equiment.
Thanks again,
