just got a 74 sea ray srv 190, it has been outside in Minnesota for awhile the floor is bad. it has nicks and scrapes around interior is gone. engine is a 5.0 mercrusier 188hp i went to drain the oil and straight water came out clear water then finally some sludgey looking oil came out. the guy i bought it from said it just needed a new carb. my question is will that engine work if i drained water out of it, or is this project a lost cause and i should just cut my looses.

thanks.

welcome to iboats, but sorry, water in the crank case, is definately a rebuild situation, and probably manifolds, risers, exhaust. i would say "you just got ripped off" if you paid more than $100.00. scrape the boat, sell the trailer, or make a utility trailer.

Re: Just bought wondering if i should cut my looses

welcome to i boats.

i would never tell someone to scrap a 190...:D :D :D

but..i totally agree with the above

......the deck is soft....so is the transom....(you dont know that yet...but it will be)....the motor is shot. and in most likely hood all the parts are too...

if you want a fantastic boat to last you for 20 years or so....rebuild it....but if you just wanna go fishin this week.......that aint the boat.....

cost break down....

motor.....3k used.
drive.....(expect 1200 to fix or repair.....but u might get lucky)
hull.....transom...300-500...deck and strings....easy 800.

interior....used...400...new....2500.

your labor....minimum 200 hrs....

a fantastic winter project....but it will cost money.

but like i said......if you just wanna go fishin.....

cheers

Re: Just bought wondering if i should cut my looses

I've got a '69 SRV190.
I think oops estimates are a little on the high side.
I put a whole new interior in mine three years ago for under $1K, although it didn't need a floor.

Count on replacing the foam under the floor. And if you go that far, I highly recommend installing a belly tank.
My floor is completely sealed except for the holes where the seats are lagged.
I can't imagine the neglect this thing had to get in such shape. It' a shame. This is a really good boat.

You are more than welcome to bring her on down here rather than cut her up.

Re: Just bought wondering if i should cut my looses

the boat in the hull extension in progress thread IS a 1969 searay srv 190.

so im right in the middle of doing one......

new b2b loungers.....500 a pop.....(just bought some 3 years ago)

doghouse......see the thread.....cost me 300 to do my self.

jump seats.....an easy 100 each.......(dyi)
and thats just the seats....we havent touched the vinal sides....carpet...side wood grain gunwhale thingies....or the rest......

pro done....easy 2500......but the point is.....if you choose to fix it it will be a FANTASTIC BOAT....and will be good for 20 years or better......

i had no quams about taking that boat in the biggest water our lake (70 miles long) could throw at it.....it took the pounding and just smiled and asked for more.

too bad im up here in canada.... i have most of that stuff and im not gonna use it

Change the oil put it on a set of muffs and crank it up.More water engine shot then find out why.No water and it sounds good go from there.May have just rained down it.See if its locked up.If it is can you break it free. You done own it see whats wrong and then decide

Re: Just bought wondering if i should cut my looses

I need to check out that hull extension thread.

Things sure do cost a lot north of the border.
I rebuilt my doghouse for about $100, B2B loungers $160 each, carpeting $90,
Added some mahogany trim - traded an old garden tractor for 6 boards, replaced all the zinc rail fittings, cleats (and backed with 1/4" steel plate) and chocks with SS, redid the jumps pads myself <$20, same with the read kick panels, also added a 6' 3-bow bimini for $180...and a few minor tidf-bits along the way...added a teak swim platform I picked up for $40, added a nicer ladder for $80, etc.
The SS was probably the most hateful $-wise.

One of us needs this boat.
I don't know if vr6t3t4 has the conviction for this project.

I just checked out the hull extension thread...pretty ambitious project.
I have a neighbor who has an SRV240. I've been trying to talk him out of it for years. It's co-owned with him and his brother. He wants to do something with it, brother doesn't. It's been sitting for a long while now. This is the hull extension route I would have taken!:)

I can attest to that. I see the boats you folks mention that are worth $4k down there and they'd fetch $6,500 to $7,500 up here.

Most of its because of excise taxes and duties importing it. Give you a comparison. My best friend bought a new Acura Sedan. $26K USD all in. Same car here in Canada was $42K CDN + tax or approx $48K total

Big difference. Same with boats, trailers, etc.

Wow. That's wuite a difference.
I was in Ottawa when I was a teenager.
I remember beer costing more.:)
and two dollar bills were more common than one dollar bills.

I think they charge more because of the alcohol in it :eek:

On the beer note, beer from the East Coast of Canada is $38 for 24 in New Brunswick, a few cents less in Ontario, and get this.... $23 USD for the exact same beer in Maui, Hawaii. We even tax ourselves to death.

mannn....i been droolin all over your boat since you put it in your sig.....

i would LOVE to see the teak swim grid and the ladder......

i was long thinking of a teak grid...ans was gonna make one out of an old teak table......but the proj is more modern.....so im going to fab one outta glass and even have the boats name imbedded into the grid.

in western canada......a 24 pack of beer is around 45 bucks i think.....a six pack is 9 or 10....... i drink corona.....and a 6 pack (bottles) is $14....where a 12 is...around $23

and a 24 pack is just under $50......

i dont know what costs more....the rebuild...or the beer to do it properly

So, get that SeaRay completed and we can all head to Hawaii with our boats, enjoy the nice weather, and drink cheaper beer.:D

Tristan

We got off topic so to bring it back, I'm with the rest of these guys. If you're looking for a long and somewhat costly rebuild, stick with it but it'll be a long project (with entertainment value for this group to boot, just check out the thread on Oops 89 Searay)

But, if you are looking for something for now, you might want to shop around.

Thanks. Once in a blue moon someone recongizes it and comments. I appreciate it greatly.
I've been comtemplating changing my sig for awhile with one of my other boats...perhaps a poll !!!

Re: Just bought wondering if i should cut my looses

well i dont know forshure the motor is bad i guess its not seized i put clean oil in it and it turns but there is so much muck and stuff in the boat its just filithy the lowere unit seems ok no torn boots and such and i hooked a battery up to it and a red light on the dash lit up, i dont even know how to start the thing yet.

id say i got way ripped off for 700$ and i should not invest any $ in it at all if its not worth it i was hoping to toss floorbords carpet some paint and some cleaning into her as my winter project not a complete over hall. iv i posted pictures would that help you guys determine if i should stick with it or ship it?

thanks for all the help so far
