16', Johnson Stinger 75 HP.

Looks like the boat is the "Sportsman" model.

What can folks tell me about the boat, the motor, and what I should be looking at.

I've been away from boats for 20 years, moved up north and got back into fishing this year. Grew up with Lunds.

How long was the Stinger 75 made? Were they good motors throughout their run?

I'm not exactly sure what made a "Stinger" a Stinger but I do know you'd be hard pressed to find a more rock solid engine than any of the 3 cylinder JohnnyRudes.

I can get into it for well under $2000 - boat looks in good condition.

Sound like a good deal?

Thanks you very much - the "considerably under" is at $1400 right now, and I think he's got some wiggle room left yet.

As I'm looking at this boat, is there anything specific I should check out? Having been away from boats 20 years, I'm concerned I'll miss something.

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame. You walk all over the deck, that a mallot, or hammer with wooden handle, using handle, tap all over the transom, a shape rap is good solid base, a thud, is questionable base.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. (This part for outboard motors Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,)
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.
boat motor combo, A 30 year old may be in better condition, than a 3 year old.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

If I remember correctly, the Blue Fin is an aluminum boat, correct?

Check transom for weakness. Tilt the motor up and push on the leg. Should see little movement in the transom.

Check the floor for soft spots and, if you can, have the boat sit in the water to see how much it leaks.

But for $1,400 I'd be happy. Sold a 1977 70hp Johnson for $1,100 a few months back. If the motor is good and you can do some repair work, should be a nice boat.

Got it for $1400.

Not a lot of repair work needed - lots of general clean up though.

Boat is solid. motor is a good runner, and I did all the checks you gentlemen suggested and everything came out fine.

Had a moment of anxiety when no water was coming out the pee-hole...but it was that someone had stuck something in there and blocked it. The former owner thought maybe it was the neighbor kids.

Thanks again for all your help - I'll be beck with questions as I start the cleanup after fall fishing season...
