Read everything you can get your hands on about the 470 and you will know what to watch for. Keep it maintained and have fun. I have a 17'4" bowrider with a 470 and it powers the boat very nicely into the high 40s.

http://www.breezeworks.net/ has a forum with a lot of good 470 info. They are also a source for 470 parts.

Thanks for the link! Looks like getting the major parts won't be a problem....

The seller said that the starter wasn't spinning as fast as it used to. Once I have a chance to test the battery, I may use Breezeworks for a replacement starter.

Cheveron Delo 400 is a great oil to use and so is Shell Rottela,,

if the starter needs replaced have it rebuilt. the replacements arnt the same as the ventage ones.

Thanks all for your inputs!

Picked up the boat Saturday...and took it into the Gulf of Mexico, for around 3 hours Sunday.

All went well. Starts instantly...and idles very smooth. Max rpm's around 4550. Feels slow, compared to my turbo charged jet ski! I will be taking my GPS next run....

Several concerns:

I managed to hit bottom several times (used to going where ever I want on the jet ski). First impact was on an oyster bed...and I 'nicked' the prop. It is a Quicksilver 48 73980 A5 19P, stainless steel 3 blade. I sensed some vibration from the outdrive after this, and am going to get a new prop. Any suggestions? This one will be alum...and my stainless one will be carried as a spare.

Second thing. The second 'grounding' was in river bottom...mostly sand. I noticed that the engine temp ran higher after that. It is hard to interpret the guage, but I think it was reaching around 195, at WOT. The temp would drop almost immediately, when I backed down to around 3000 rpm's. The impeller, and related parts, are all new.

P.S. the seller had the complete alternator upgrade setup, that he was going to use when the voltage regulator 'crapped' out. He let me have this for an extra $100....
