Service Manuals - OEM or Aftermarket?

Generally I stick with OEM manuals for Motorcycles and ATVs. I also like to get manuals prettry specifc to the year and model. What about boats, same deal? Never saw the name SELOC before until I started looking for an outboard manual for my 1988 v4 90 Evinrude.

Re: Service Manuals - OEM or Aftermarket?

Jason,

I use both and they complement each other. The factory manual is very specific and really covers everything great (I wouldn't be without it), but it assumes you're trained, experienced and have all the OMC-specific tools and test equipment available.

The Seloc manual is often better at explaining a procedure or providing an alternative to "professional" tools and test equipment. Just yesterday I removed and reinstalled the heads. I had a little trouble interpreting the shop manual instructions for placing sealant around the cooling passages. The Seloc clarified it for me and everything is working fine this morning.

In addition to those two, I also procured an owners manual and a parts catalog for my motor, which shows you via blowup diagrams, what every [art is called; and how and where everything fits together.

You'd be surprised at how much you can tackle when you have all that documentation working together to guide you.
