I recently purchased a slightly used yamaha 2 stroke and last week I had the chance to run it. The motor idles perfect, and runs great until I get past 3/4 throttle, I can run on top end for about 100 yards and then it just shuts down. This happened to me 3 times. I checked the vent on the tank and it was open and I also had in fresh fuel. Could this be a carb problem? any other ideas. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to Iboats. When you run it again and she starts to die, squeeze the fuel bulb (primer), is the primer flat and soft, is it firm? if the motor picks up and goes for a while then cuts out again, your fuel pump may need cleaning or overhaul; you can also do another quick check before you start dismantling parts; remove the intake cover in front of carb, and spray some pre-mix fuel into the carb when the problem occurs: what happens? if the motor picks up the problem is fuel related. In this case, check fuel pump, clean filters, check lines for restrictions and air leaks, remove carb, inspect, if gunk is stuck onto bowl and jets, soak in carb cleaner, clean and blow with compressed air. You may have a stuck float valve needle and crud in you main jets.

Ok, here is what I did. I changed the spark plugs, new fuel line and tank, and I sprayed carb cleaner in the carb. Had the boat out on Sunday and it ran fine everything seemed just perfect. Thanks for the help.
