I have finally figured out how to get my motor started quickly and properly. After it will idle just fine. I put it into gear and idle slowly out of my canal. Still pretty good. But then when I push forward for more throtle it wil not go. It most times stalls unless I pull back on the throttle. Starts right back up and I keep trying . Eventually after a few more trys it takes off and I dont have any more trouble like that for the rest of my trip.

Any suggestions of what I should try or what could be causing this. It's actually not too big of a issue but I know somethings a little off.

I have already done some things to the engine already to make it run a little better.
1. new power pack
2. new plugs
3. 4 new coils
4.new regulator

hope someone has some ideas.

Thank You

Spark plugs should be Champion QL77JC4 plugs, gapped at .040 . Are they?

Re: evinrude 115 1973

I have 77 plugs in now but i was using the flat ones before and the motor seems the same either way.

Tonight i took it out and it was very hard to start. probaly because i was in a hurry. But again as I start to throttle up it will not go. maybe takes a full minute or two. Throttle pushed forward enough that the boat should be taking off lifting the bow. But instaed it bogs and wants to stall. Then after that minute or so you here the engine start catching and bam turns right up to full rpm and planes out very nicely. I thought it could be carb related but after it runs for a while it doesn't display that behavior anymore and will start up (if iI haven't been parked fishing for too long right away) and take with no problems. So now I'm thinking some type of heat up situation in the cylynders.
When they get hot enough they make more compresion to give it power.

I just dont know what to try and the motor is 35 years old.

Any tricks of the trade That I could try.
thanks again

cant wait to here suggestions

Initially I was thinking it could be a warm up problem too. My 115 is a lil testy until it warms up a bit. If for some reason your thermostats had been removed the engine will take an excessively long time to reach peak operating temp. However, generally your idle would be affected not just WOT response. Try pulling your high speed jets (2 per carb)and inspect/clean. Each time you pull a jet squeeze the primer bulb and catch the gas with a rag. Since the jets are on the bottom of the carb this will flush any large particles out of the bowl. It could just be time to rebuild and soak the carbs. A sticking float would also cause the symptoms you are describing.

Ok, so I've been using the boat everyday now for at least the last two weeks. Some times hard to start sometimes not so much.
Every morning it bogs as i try to speed upp but eventually catches.

I turn the engine off and drift fish sometimes for 45 minutes. Then hard to start again and stalls sometimes when I try and take off.

Also it has this sort of hicup cough kind of thing at low idle or moving very slow.

Well I think I will try and remove the carbs and clean them.

How tough is this to do? And do I have to buy a rebuild kit or should just try and clean them.

thanks

Get a rebuild kit, it will set you back maybe $25~$30 (you will need 2 kits). While your at it, get some rubber gaskets for your fuel pump, One never really seems to seal everything with the screen ( I used 2 and it worked, maybe not the best thing but hey). The hardest part I had with the carbs is undoing the nuts that hold those things on, you can only go about 1/8 a turn with the wrench at a time. Takes about 30 mins to undo those 8 nuts. After that everyhthing is pretty easy to do.

One last thing, make sure to run you engine dry or empty out the fuel bowls, or at least be ready for some gas to spill. I don't know about everyone else, but the minute some gasoline or oil spills (doesn't matter how much) I am covered head to toe in the stuff. Good luck!!
