sledding in a boat? :p

wondering if anybody has tried it. i can't imagine it would be too far fetched or even too hard.

take a flat bottomed boat (like an aluminum bass boat) to the top of a hill, hop in, slide down. the ribs along the bottom of the boat would keep it going straight.

it could probably work for a v-hull boat as well, but the snow would need to be deeper and the hill steeper.

no need to stow a boat for the winter time

How about a snow anchor? Of course getting it back to the top of the hill could be tough. Oars to steer, give it a good push and climb in over the transom. How is it going to look with a skier behind it?<LOL>

Hell, if you're gonna go through the effort, get a dual axle trailer, throw on a small motor and a set of tracks and drive it back up the hill each time

On second thought, scratch that. Trailering would be a b*tch unless you created a snowhill at the bottom to launch it back onto the trailer.

If you actually do this there....How bout posting some video....or better yet send it to "redneck videos". I'm actually thinking about the physics of it now, not just laughing. This has possibilities....and DISASTER written all over it.

if you think about it. the shape is pretty much the same as one of those long sleds sold in toy stores.

both have a flat bottom with ribs, curved front, flat back, and slightly sloped sides. the boat is pretty much just a large scale version of a kids sled. remove the motor, replace the seats with ones that are flat on the deck, take it for a slide down a big hill

some mountains have snow tubing (like the one 20 miles from my house).
wonder if they would let me test my boat on it

Holy Dental Work Wetman! Think about all of the sudden stops you have when sledding. Would you rather do that in a little plastic sled that you fall out of or in a big metal boat that you slam into?

Seriously, though, if you do it take video! Please just keep kids out of it!

I haven't tried it with a boat, but an old car hood makes a great sled and will hold a dozen crazy teenagers. Did that in my younger years. I'm older and wiser now.

off the side of a very big damn as a teenager.

works great, you just have to pull it back up.

not fun.

more fun is to tie it to the back of a jeep with rope and run all over the county.

problem.

high speed turns and mailboxes. ouch!

another trick was to use old wooden water skis with the fins removed.

growing up on a big lake these things were everywhere.

we use to pull the fins off, tie a ski rope to the bumper of whatever had snow tires at the moment, and ski though town.

warning!

manhole covers don't freeze.

old wooden skis don't glide well on cast iron.

40mph nose dives on the water, are more fun than on snow and ice covered frozen asphalt.

BTDT.....

in edmonton alberta..canada....there is a hill called government hill....it is a really steep hill (a river bank)....

in the early 70's my buddies found a 12 foot fiberglass hull with bench seats....a tri....

we drug it over there...not really heavy....and 7 of us got in...

at the bottom of the really steep 300 foot run, was a large flat area about the legnth of a football frild....after that...a ditch..a small road..trees ...and a swift cold river....( frozen over...but you NEVER walked on it)

i bailed out before the ditch....while i was rolling and the snow flying....i didnt see them launch out of the ditch but i did see them get caught by the trees.

after the ominous silence of "we just about died" i found out they cleared 3/4 of the road and hit the trees hard.

the trees were just along the river bank....if they wernt there...it would of been a boat load of kids sitting in the middle of an thin ice covered river screeming for their lives...

(the glass hull lived...it cracked a bit form the trees...(what i know now as crazing).....

the tri hull was super stable....the gellcoat made it fly on hard packed snow..(allmost ice)

we didnt do it again.

yes that is fun.. as a kid growing up on a farm my dad would tie an old 50's chevy pickup hood to the bumper of his old pickup, and all of us kids and cousins would hop in and away we'd go.. great fun... now days my brother and I tie one of his kids sleds behind a 4 wheeler and to a similar thing, but its only a couple kids will fit.. might have to see if dad has that old hood still laying around. and thow all my neices and nephews in it. the more the merrier right.

back in the mid 60's my dad and his brothers took some other old 50's style hoods and welded them together and made a funny looking boat. and went down put it in the river and attempted to paddle down... I guess you couldnt control it. we have old familly video of 3 grown men in this little boat attempting to paddle down the river.... years later my dad, brother an myself did the same thing we took that old boat, fixed it up so it diddnt leak as bad and floated down the river for several miles..great fun... but once again.. zero control
