1977 evinrude 55 will not run in water

it runs like a top on the water boot,but when i put it in the water for the first it just won't pop off.the carbs look pretty new for a 77 could they still need to be rebuilt.any help would be great....

bump the idle up. The back pressure from the water will cause it to act different.

it will not start at all,should I just keep turnning it up until it starts and set it back to where it was if it dosen't?

it should have a warm up lever that will allow you to raise the idle to get it to start.

if you are talking about the lever that you lft on the controls the yes i lift it when i try to start,sorry i have only had this boat 2 days

have you tried pushing the key in to choke the engine while trying to start it?

Starting procedure:: squeeze the primer bulb till firm,Set high idle lever
turn the key and push to prime.If it refuses to start.You might carefully squirt a little fuel mix into the carb.Sometimes if the carb is gunked up from sitting for long periods it will not operate in the water.If it runs off the squirt the carb will need a rebuild.

thanks for the help i was already doing the starting procedure,i had it runnig great before i tried putting it in the water now can't even get it to start on the boot it smells like it is flooding but i have good spark plugs????could somthing have shorted out?

when it won't start check for spark. If it has none then that is your problem. If it does then the problem is something else. Have you check compression? Low compression will allow it to start on the muffs, but not in the water. We cannot tell you what it is only where to look. A motor needs three things to run, fuel, spark, and compression and all at the right time. If it won't start it is one of these things.
