Evinrude/Johnson interchangibility problems.

Hi folks, this is my first post on here as Im new to the boating world.
My problem is, the 90 horse evinrude on my 86 chriscraft coughed up a piston. I bought a 77-78 115 horse Johnson thinking it would just swap out as I was told that they were interchangeable. Unfortunately this doesnt seem to be the case after attempting to mate up the power tilt/trim to the new motor. The brackets are different so I decided to just swap the swivel bracket but it seems that the pivot shaft is a tad larger on the Evinrude.
So, could I just swap powerheads, or is that not feasible? What would be the best route to go barring any unforseen interchangability problems? Does anyone know?
Thanks ahead of time.

Re: Evinrude/Johnson interchangibility problems.

It makes a difference what year your other engine is. It is a 77 or 78? The midsection exhaust adapters and shifting mechanisms changed in 1978. If you have a 77, it will not directly bolt up. You may be able to make it fit if you change adapters, but am not sure if the adapters will interchange.... Also, the 77 lower unit shift rods are different at the top and the connecting shift mechanism under the bottom carb is different.
